Which DRAGONtail Tenkara model, if any
Who DRAGONtail Tenkara is
DRAGONtail Tenkara's website describes the brand with the slogan "Providing affordable quality in Tenkara gear" and calls itself a one-stop shop for everything you need for tenkara. It sells rods, lines, furled lines and tippet, plus flies, accessories, fly tying materials and apparel. It lists a support email and a phone number. I did not find a founding date, history or business address on the pages I read, and I couldn't find an About page, so I won't write a history I can't source.
That also means I have little to say about who stands behind the brand. What I can tell you comes from the maker's rod collection and warranty pages, and from the Amazon listings in our data. Where the maker doesn't say something, the table shows a dash.
What DRAGONtail Tenkara sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track nine DRAGONtail Tenkara products on Amazon US. There are three rods (the Shadowfire 365, the HELLbender and the TinyTALON 245) and six lines (a level line, three furled lines, a tapered PVC floating line and a nylon tapered line). Under each value in the table is a small mark. Maker means DRAGONtail states it. Claimed is a maker claim with no standard named. Listing means the Amazon listing says so. A dash means we could not confirm it. Almost everything for the three rods is a maker value in our data, while the nylon tapered line is the only item whose material comes from the listing alone.
How tenkara works, in a paragraph
Tenkara is a style of fly fishing with a long telescoping rod, a line tied to the rod tip and no reel. You choose the line length for the water, you fish a short leader or tippet, and you control the fish by lifting the rod and using the rod's flex. It suits small streams, travel and anglers who want less gear. It is not the best choice for big, fast water or for fish that run a long way. Our guides on what is tenkara and tenkara vs fly fishing go through the pros and cons.
The rods
All three rods are listed as one-piece telescoping graphite or composite rods. "One-piece" in this context means the rod is a single nested unit, which is why they collapse short.
Shadowfire 365. A 12-foot (144 inch) graphite rod weighing 2.9 oz, collapsing to 23.25 inches. The maker's page says that although it is priced like an entry-level rod, it performs like a high-performance rod. (Both halves of that sentence are the maker's, and the Marketing Copy is rarely shy about the second one.) Twelve feet is the length many tenkara anglers use first, because it covers a lot of trout water without being unwieldy.
HELLbender. The maker lists it as a 13 foot to 11 foot (390 to 340 cm) zoom rod with a 7:3 action, and calls it its premium big-fish rod. In our data it is 156 inches, 3.3 oz and 23.8 inches collapsed. A zoom rod lets you collapse the tip section to fish it shorter. The action ratio, as tenkara makers generally use it, describes where the rod flexes: 7:3 is the stiffer end, with more of the work done near the tip, and 6:4 flexes deeper into the blank. I'd treat the ratio as a hint, not a measurement, and read the maker's own description.
TinyTALON 245. A compact 8-foot (96 inch) composite rod with a cork handle, 1.9 oz and 11.34 inches collapsed. The maker describes a pocket mini rod with a 6:4 action, lightweight, flexible and durable. It is the one to look at for small streams, tight cover and packing light. It is not a distance tool, and you can't mend line much with 8 feet of rod.
Which length for which water? Shorter rods handle brush and small streams, and longer rods give you reach, a higher line off the water, and an easier time managing drag over currents. The trade-off is weight and wind. Our tenkara fly rods page lists other brands, and the fly fishing for trout guide shows what each style of water asks for.
The lines
Tenkara lines do the job that a reel and fly line do together, so the choice matters.
- Level Line. A plain line, listed at 98.4 feet of 100% fluorocarbon. A level line has the same diameter along its length. It's the simplest and cheapest to understand, and it is where many beginners start. You cut it to the length you want. It is less delicate than a tapered line.
- Shogun, Oudachi and Tachi furled lines. A furled line is twisted from several fine threads into a taper. The Shogun is listed as weight-forward and furled. The Oudachi is furled with a fluorocarbon tip section. The Tachi is a three-leg furled line. Furled lines are popular with tenkara anglers for the soft way they land a small fly. They need more care than a level line, so store them dry and loose.
- Tapered PVC Floating Line. A floating line with a PVC coating over a monofilament core. It's closer in feel to a regular fly line than a furled one is.
- Nylon Tapered Tenkara Line. A nylon tapered line. Nothing else is confirmed in our data except what the listing says.
None of these lines has a length, diameter or taper figure in our data, apart from the level line's length. That makes comparison hard from the data alone, so read the maker's product page for the one you want, and match the line length to the rod. The maker's guidance on line length for each rod is the thing to check.
Warranty and repairs
DRAGONtail's warranty page says every DRAGONtail Tenkara rod includes a one-time replacement. It is for the rod only and does not include the rod tube or other extras. The replacement costs a fee plus shipping, which varies by model, and discontinued models instead get a trade-in credit toward a new rod. You need your purchase receipt, and the page says the company does not warranty non-DRAGONtail rods. The page does not describe a claim form, so you'd contact support.
That is different from a lifetime repair program, and I'd plan for it. The one-time replacement means a second break is on you. The page offers an alternative: you can buy a replacement section from the Rod Parts page and swap it in yourself by opening the butt cap, sliding out the broken section and sliding in the new one. For a telescoping rod, a broken tip section is the usual casualty, so that is worth knowing about before you buy.
What a first tenkara outfit needs
A rod and a line are not the whole kit. You also need tippet (the thin section between the line and the fly), a few flies, and something to cut line with. The maker's site sells tippet, flies and accessories, and the table above covers only the rods and lines that are on Amazon. If you have never fished a fly before, the beginner gear guide lists the small items that are easy to forget. Keep the rod tube too: the rod warranty does not include it, so a lost tube is a cost you carry yourself.
How to choose
Pick the rod length first: 8 feet for tiny water, 12 feet for general trout water, 13 feet or a zoom for bigger fish. Then pick the line: level to learn, furled for finesse, tapered PVC for a feel closer to a standard fly line. Next, plan your terminal setup. The maker's site sells tippet, and you will need flies. Our fly fishing gear for beginners guide covers the rest, and the types of fly line page explains how tenkara lines differ from reel lines.
Handle collapsed rods with care. Telescoping tips are fragile when they are closed, and the usual way to break one is to close a wet, gritty section or pull it out at an angle. Dry the rod and extend it fully before you pack it.
What this page cannot tell you
I haven't cast any DRAGONtail rod or line, and I did not read the Amazon reviews, so I have no buyer feedback to add. The line data is thin: no weights, diameters or lengths for most of them. The maker's rod pages truncated before giving casting weight or recommended line, so I can't tell you what line each rod is designed for. This page is a snapshot of October 2026.

Questions about DRAGONtail Tenkara
What is DRAGONtail Tenkara?
It is a tenkara gear brand whose website calls itself a one-stop shop for everything you need for tenkara. The site sells rods, lines, furled lines and tippet, plus flies, accessories, fly tying materials and apparel. I did not find a founding date, history or business address on the pages I read, so I can't tell you more about the company.
What is the DRAGONtail Tenkara rod warranty?
Every DRAGONtail Tenkara rod includes a one-time replacement. It is for the rod only and does not include the rod tube or other extras. The replacement costs a fee plus shipping, which varies by model, and discontinued models get a trade-in credit toward a new rod. You need your purchase receipt. The page says the company does not warranty non-DRAGONtail rods. The alternative is to buy a replacement section and swap it in yourself.
Which DRAGONtail rod should I buy?
It depends on the water. The TinyTALON 245 is the shortest, at 8 feet and 1.9 oz, for small streams and tight cover. The Shadowfire 365 is 12 feet and 2.9 oz, which is a common all-round tenkara length. The HELLbender is the longest, at 13 feet and 3.3 oz in the data, and the maker describes it as a zoom rod of 11 to 13 feet for big fish. Our tenkara rod page lists other brands.
What does zoom mean on a tenkara rod?
A zoom rod can be fished at more than one length by collapsing the last section or sections. The HELLbender is listed by the maker as a 13 foot to 11 foot (390 to 340 cm) zoom rod. A fixed-length rod like the Shadowfire 365 fishes at one length. A zoom rod gives you a short setting for brush and a long one for open water.
What is a furled tenkara line?
A furled line is made by twisting several thin threads together into a tapered line, instead of extruding a single strand. DRAGONtail sells the Shogun, Oudachi and Tachi furled lines. The Oudachi is listed with a fluorocarbon tip section, and the Tachi is listed as a three-leg furled line. Furled lines tend to lay out softly, which many tenkara anglers like for small flies, though they take more care than a level line.
Do I need a reel for tenkara?
No. Tenkara is fished with a line tied to the rod tip, which is why the DRAGONtail rods have no reel seat and the data lists only rods, lines and tippet. You adjust line length by choosing the line, not by stripping off a reel. Our guide on tenkara versus fly fishing explains the differences.
How long are DRAGONtail Tenkara rods when collapsed?
In our data the Shadowfire 365 collapses to 23.25 inches, the HELLbender to 23.8 inches and the TinyTALON 245 to 11.34 inches. They are listed as one-piece telescoping rods, which is why they pack so short. Weights range from 1.9 oz to 3.3 oz.
