Fly Fishing Rods

A fly fishing rod is a long, light rod built to cast a heavy line rather than a heavy lure, and you choose one with three numbers: line weight, length and action. Line weight says which fly line the rod is built for, length says how far and how precisely you can reach, and action says where the rod bends. The table above lists the fly rods we track on Amazon US, with each value marked as stated by the maker, a maker's claim, taken from the Amazon listing, or not confirmed. The sections below explain what the columns mean and how I'd narrow the list.

What's in this tableEvery single fly rod we track on Amazon US, from light to heavy line weights. Rod-and-reel outfits are on the combos page.

What a fly fishing rod is, and who needs one

If you want to cast a fly, you want a fly rod. A spinning rod throws the weight of the lure; a fly rod throws the weight of the line, and the nearly weightless fly goes along for the ride. That is why the rod, the reel and the line have to be matched, and why the first number on any fly rod is a line weight, not a length or a price.

Fly rods suit anyone who wants to fish with flies, from a kid with a bluegill pond to someone planning a week on a trout river. The overlap between rod types is large, so "which fly rod should I buy" has an honest answer of "it depends on the fish, the fly and the water". The rest of this page is about turning those three things into a short list.

How to read the table

Each value in the table carries a small mark. Maker means it is stated on the manufacturer's own page. Claimed means the maker says so with no independent standard named. Listing means it comes from the Amazon listing and the maker has not confirmed it. A dash means we could not confirm it anywhere, and we do not guess. Under each model name, a "More specs" toggle shows everything else we know.

The columns:

The table can be filtered by line-weight band (1 to 3, 4 to 6, 7 to 9, 10 and up), by up to three spec selects and by brand, and sorted by any column.

Line weight: the number that matters most

Fly lines are numbered from 1 (lightest) to 15, and the standard sets a target weight for the first 30 feet of line, not counting the level tip. According to the standard as summarised on Wikipedia, a 3-weight line targets 100 grains, a 5-weight targets 140 grains and an 8-weight targets 210 grains. A rod is built to flex properly under a line of its rated weight, so the rod's number tells you which line to buy.

In practice, I'd think of three bands:

The line weights below 5 and the 6, 7 and 9 weights do not have pages of their own. The table's line-weight filter lets you find a 2-weight, 4-weight, 6-weight, 7-weight or 9-weight rod, and the dual-rated 2/3 and 3/4 rods count in the neighbouring bands. Our fly rod weight chart matches weights to fish, and the guides on what weight fly rod for trout and for bass take it one species at a time.

A listing that calls a rod "all-purpose" or "versatile" is not telling you a line weight. All-purpose for whose purpose? Look at the gauge.

Length and pieces

Length is a trade-off. A short rod, 7 feet or under, fits brushy creeks and tight casts, and weighs very little. A 9-foot rod is the usual middle: enough length to lift line off the water and cover distance without being awkward. A longer rod, 10 feet and up, gives reach for line control and is the standard shape for Euro nymphing. Most rods you will see in the data run from about 7 to 10 feet for general work, with longer ones for special jobs.

Pieces matter for travel and storage. Most of the rods in the table are four-piece, which fits a pack or a suitcase, with two-piece and three-piece rods at the cheaper end and an occasional six or eight-piece travel model. More joints are not a problem for casting if the rod is well made, though the ferrules (the joints) deserve a quick wipe now and then. Our fly rod length guide goes further.

Action: where the rod bends

Orvis describes action as where the rod flexes. A fast rod bends mostly near the tip and stays stiff below, which gives power for big fish and for pushing casts through wind, but Orvis also says it is hard for beginners because it does not absorb mistakes. A medium rod bends from the tip down about a quarter of the way, which Orvis calls the best combination of performance and versatility. A slow rod bends deeper, up to three-quarters of its length, and suits short, delicate casts and small streams.

Two cautions. First, action labels are not standardised across makers, so a "moderate" from one company can feel faster than a "fast" from another. Second, the table shows what the maker or listing says, not what a rod feels like in the hand. Our fly rod action guide explains the terms, and the fast-action fly rods page lists rods whose makers call them fast or extra-fast.

Moderate and slow rods exist too, and they are a deliberate choice. Plenty of anglers like a softer rod for dry flies and short casts on small water. The "action" column lets you filter for them.

Graphite, fiberglass and composite

The blank material column shows what the rod is made of. Graphite is the common one in the data, and it tends to be light and stiff. Fiberglass is back in numbers, particularly in 3-weight and 4-weight lengths where a soft, forgiving feel is the point. Composite means the maker describes a blend. We only fill this in when the maker or listing says so. Our fiberglass vs graphite fly rod guide compares them, and the graphite and fiberglass pages list the rods.

Bamboo fly rods

Bamboo rods are the old way of making a fly rod, and they are still made. A bamboo fly rod is built by splitting bamboo culms into strips, milling them to a precise taper and gluing them into a hexagonal (sometimes square or octagonal) cross-section. Wikipedia notes that Tonkin cane is the most used species and that the guides, varnish, cork grip and wooden reel seat can take a craftsperson more than 40 hours. The first six-sided rod is credited to H.L. Leonard, who began making rods in 1874, and the six-strip design is still the dominant one.

Today, Wikipedia says Winston and Orvis still make high-quality bamboo rods, and a handful of small makers in the UK and the US do too. These are specialist, hand-built rods, and they are sold mostly by the makers and fly shops. At our last check (October 2026) none of the rods we track on Amazon US lists a split-bamboo blank, so there is no bamboo table here.

What to look for if you go shopping elsewhere:

How to choose

By fish. Small trout and panfish call for a light rod, and bigger trout, smallmouth bass and steelhead-sized fish for a mid or heavy one. Our guides on fly fishing for trout, bass, carp, pike and steelhead tell you what weight each tends to use.

By water. Brushy creeks reward short, light rods. Open rivers and lakes reward 9 feet. Saltwater and wind call for stronger rods, usually 8-weight and up, and for rods whose maker states salt use. See saltwater fly rods and trout fly rods.

By technique. Euro nymphing wants a long, light rod with a sensitive tip, and the Euro nymph rod page covers it. Tenkara and spey rods are different tools with their own pages: tenkara and spey.

By budget. I will keep prices out of this page, but the lowest tier does not mean junk, and the top tier does not mean you need it. A rod that suits your fish and fits your hand beats a rod with a famous name on it. The budget fly rods page applies a written rule to the data, and the best fly rods page applies another. A warranty is part of what you are buying, so read it.

By how you travel. A collapsible fly rod or a four-piece or six-piece pack rod makes sense if the rod will live in luggage.

Rod, reel and line: buy them together

A rod does nothing without a reel to hold the line and a line to cast. If you are starting from nothing, a fly rod combo or one of the starter kits can save you matching the parts. If you buy parts separately, match the line weight on all three, and see fly reels and fly lines. The fly rod setup guide walks through it.

Common mistakes

Care and storage

Dry the rod before it goes into its tube. Salt is the one thing to rinse off immediately. Do not slam a rod into a car door, and do not leave it in a hot vehicle. The Hook Drawer is not a rod tube: it is where lines, hooks and the manual for a rod you no longer own go to live. The rod belongs in its case.

Brands in the table

The table is led by makers that sell a lot of line weights. Brands that appear include Aventik, Redington, Douglas, Hardy, Echo, Cortland, Thomas & Thomas, Wild Water, Maxcatch, Greys, Temple Fork Outfitters, Snowbee, Shakespeare, Okuma, St. Croix, Lamson and Winston. Smaller makers appear as well. See the full brand catalog to pick a maker.

Questions people ask

What are the main types of fly rods?

You can sort them three ways. By line weight: light rods (roughly 1 to 4) for small fish and small water, mid-weights (5 to 7) for trout, bass and steelhead-sized jobs, and heavy rods (8 and up) for big flies and big fish. By action: fast, medium-fast, moderate and slow. By material: graphite, fiberglass and composite, plus split bamboo from specialist makers. There are also two-handed spey and switch rods and Euro nymphing rods, which have their own pages.

How do I choose a fly rod?

Start with the fish and the fly. Pick the line weight that suits the biggest fish and flies you expect to cast, then a length that fits the water: shorter for brushy creeks, around nine feet for general work, longer for reach. Then think about action. The line weight pages for 3-weight, 5-weight and 8-weight rods and our guide to fly rod length and action go deeper on each step.

What fly rod should I buy first?

For trout in most streams, a 9-foot 5-weight is the classic starting point, and Field & Stream calls it the classic all-around trout rod. For small creeks and small fish a 3-weight is gentler, and for big flies and big fish an 8-weight is the usual step up. If you want rod, reel and line together, the starter kits list is the place to look. If you only fish one place, let that place decide.

How do I pick a beginner fly rod?

Look for a mid-weight line rating, a length around nine feet, and an action the maker calls medium-fast or moderate. Orvis says fast-action rods are hard for beginners because they do not absorb mistakes, while a medium action gives a good mix of performance and versatility. A four-piece rod with a warranty is easy to carry and easy to get fixed. Check the Warranty column for the wording.

How do I store a fly rod?

Take it apart, let it dry, and put it back in its tube or sock with the sections separate and the cap on. Keep it somewhere cool and dry, out of a hot car and out of direct sun. That advice is my rule of thumb for graphite and glass, and it matches the care points for bamboo: clean, dry, cool and away from sunlight.

How do I clean a fly rod?

Wipe the blank with a damp cloth after a day on the water, rinse off salt or grit with fresh water if you fished in the salt, and let every section dry fully before it goes back in the tube. Clean the ferrule (the joint where sections slide together) when it looks gritty. That is editorial advice, so follow the maker's care notes if they differ.

What do I do if a fly rod breaks?

Read the warranty before you do anything else. Several rods in our data carry a lifetime or long original-owner warranty, others one or two years, and some have no warranty confirmed anywhere. Makers differ on registration windows and repair fees, so use the exact wording in the Warranty column, then contact the maker. I would not glue a snapped section back together and then ask for a replacement.

Are bamboo fly rods on Amazon?

Not that we track. At our last check (October 2026) no rod in our data lists a split-bamboo blank, so there is no bamboo table. The section on bamboo rods above explains what they are and how to care for them.
