Which Moonlit Fly Fishing model, if any
Who Moonlit Fly Fishing is
Moonlit's About page says the company specializes in furling, an old technique of twisting and bonding fine strands into leaders, and that its leaders are made to the owner's specifications and hand made in the USA. The page says the company was created to share a passion for fly fishing with the founder's grandfather. A vision statement adds that the company wants to offer high-performance gear and affordability for anglers of all levels.
That is all the company says about itself. The page gives no founding year, no location and no ownership details, and I could not find an independent source for any of them, so I am not going to guess. If you want to know who you are buying from, the Amazon listing names the seller, and the maker's site has contact and dealer pages.
What you will notice on the maker's site is how wide the catalog is. Fly-tying materials, hooks, flies, rods, reels, lines, leaders and tippet, nets, packs and some apparel all sit there. On Amazon US, in our data, the range is much narrower, and that is what this page covers.
What Moonlit sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track seven Moonlit products: five fly lines, one reel and one rod. The table above shows them, followed by eight alternatives that are labelled with their own brand. I added those because seven products is a short list, and a comparison is more useful than a short list. How I picked them is explained near the end of the page.
A reminder about the marks under each value in the table. "Maker" means the value is stated on Moonlit's own page. "Listing" means only the Amazon listing says it. A dash means we could not confirm the value, and we do not guess. For Moonlit's lines in particular, many values come from the listings, because the maker's pages we found are descriptive and give few numbers.
The fly lines
Moonlit's lines are the core of its Amazon range, and they come in three flavors.
All-Purpose weight-forward floating. A floating line listed at 85 feet with welded loops at both ends and a braided multifilament nylon core. The maker's page for the Lunar rod describes it as a short-head design that loads the rod quickly, holds tight loops and tracks well, and says it performs best at short to intermediate distances, up to about 50 feet, with easy roll casts. A short head (the thick, heavy front section of a weight-forward line) is easier to cast on a short rod and in small water, and harder to carry a long cast with.
Performance Taper weight-forward floating. The maker says this line is designed to pick up line, load the rod and shoot with few false casts, and that it suits casts of 30 feet and beyond. The maker also compares it to the creek lines from RIO and Scientific Anglers. That is the maker's own comparison and I haven't checked it against those lines. It is meant for places where you do not have room for a long back cast. We have no length for this listing.
Floating with sink tip, S1, S3 and S5. Three floating lines that end in a sinking tip, in a 4 to 8 weight range, each with a 25 lb low-stretch braided core coated in PVC. The S3 and S5 listings give 100 feet. The sink rates are stated in inches per second: 1.5 to 2.5 for the intermediate S1, 2.5 to 4.0 for the S3 and 4.5 to 6.0 for the S5. A sink-tip line keeps most of the line on the surface, where it is easy to mend and pick up, and lets only the front section sink. It is a middle road between a floating line and a full sinking line. See types of fly line for the full picture.
One thing to watch with Moonlit's lines: the listings cover a range of weights as variants. The floating lines offer 2 to 10 and the sink tips 4 to 8, and our table shows a single representative weight for each product. That means the Line weight gauge in the table is a hint, not a complete picture. Before you add one to your cart, check which variant is selected.
For other brands, see our fly lines and floating fly lines pages.
The Eclipse reel
The Eclipse is described by the maker as a machined, die-cast reel with a smooth, sealed drag made from stainless steel and carbon discs, a fully machined one-turn adjustment knob, and a pop-out spool release. The maker lists three sizes: 3 to 4 weight (4.27 oz), 5 to 6 weight (4.87 oz) and 7 to 8 weight (6.24 oz). In our data only the 7/8 size is listed on Amazon, with a 3.74-inch spool diameter and room for a WF7 line plus 164 yards of 20 lb backing.
The maker's page raises one question I can't answer. The heading says "Made in Korea," and the feature list says "Made in the USA," with the ball bearings made in Japan. Perhaps the statements describe different parts, perhaps one is out of date. If origin matters to you, look at the listing and the box. (The Marketing Copy has a way of covering several countries at once.)
For a 7- or 8-weight rod, a 6.24 oz reel is in the middle of the range. If you are balancing a rod, the right reel weight is the one that makes the rod hang level when you hold it at the grip. Read our fly reel size guide for how to match a reel to your line, and see the fly reels page for the rest of the category.
The Lunar S2 glass rod
The one Moonlit rod in our data is the Lunar S2 Glass 3-weight at 7 feet, listed at 2.9 oz with a wood insert reel seat. According to the maker's page, the Lunar S2 series is made with S2 glass, which the maker says gives faster recovery and lighter weight than traditional fiberglass while keeping the classic smooth action. The series comes in seven sizes on the maker's site, from a 6-foot-8 2-weight to an 8-foot-6 8-weight, and the maker says the rods are line true, so over-lining is not necessary. The maker recommends its All Purpose and Performance Taper lines for them.
Those are the maker's statements, and the faster-recovery claim has no test behind it that I can point you to. What I can say from the numbers is that a 7-foot 3-weight glass rod is a small-stream tool: short casts, small flies and fish that don't need to be pulled hard. Fiberglass tends to feel softer than graphite, which is why some people like it for close work. Read our fiberglass vs graphite guide for the trade-offs, and see the fiberglass fly rods page for other brands.
Our data does not give the Lunar's piece count, and I won't assume one. If you travel, check the listing.
Warranty
On the Lunar S2 page the maker describes an updated lifetime warranty for rods. Instead of a single flat fee, it charges per rod section that needs replacement, with a higher charge for the lower sections, plus a shipping charge within the continental United States. International orders have extra shipping charges. In short, it is a lifetime warranty with a fee, not a free replacement. I'd read the full terms on the maker's page before relying on it.
For the lines and the Eclipse reel we found no warranty statement on the maker's pages. That does not mean there is none, only that we could not confirm one, so the table shows a dash.
The alternatives in the table
Because Moonlit has only seven products on Amazon US in our data, the table adds eight alternatives from other brands. They are chosen by a simple rule: products of the same type as what Moonlit sells, from a similar price tier, with the most specifications stated by the maker. Moonlit sells a rod, a reel and lines, and the table pulled in three Aventik graphite rods and five Lamson Liquid S reels.
The Aventik rods in the table are the Stalker 8-foot 3-weight and the two Whisperer rods (6-foot-8 for a 2/3-weight and 6-foot-1 for a 0/1-weight). All three are four-piece, fast-action graphite rods, and the maker lists a 25-year warranty for the original owner. Those are small-water rods, close to the Lunar's niche but made of graphite, not glass. The Lamson Liquid S reels span 2 to 10 weight in four sizes. They have a large arbor, a sealed conical drag and a convertible retrieve, and the maker lists a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner. The table shows weight and drag so you can compare them with the Eclipse. There is also a three-pack of spools in the table, so read the title of that row.
None of the alternatives is a substitute for a Moonlit line, because neither Aventik nor Lamson is on the table for lines. If lines are what you came for, our fly lines page lists the rest.
How to choose
Start with the rod you own. Match the line weight to the rod's rating, then choose a taper and a density. If you fish mostly dry flies and nymphs near the surface, a floating line is enough, and the All-Purpose or Performance line would do. If you want to fish streamers or nymphs deeper without changing to a full sinking line, a sink tip such as the S3 is the common compromise. The S5 suits faster or deeper water, and the S1 suits shallow water with a slow sink.
Common mistakes: buying a line without checking the variant weight on a listing that covers 2 to 10; pairing a short-head line with a rod meant for distance; and forgetting backing. A reel needs backing under the line, so look at the capacity column. Our how much backing goes on a fly reel guide covers the arithmetic.

Questions about Moonlit Fly Fishing
What does Moonlit Fly Fishing sell on Amazon?
In our data, five fly lines, one reel and one rod. The lines are an All-Purpose weight-forward floating line, a Performance weight-forward floating line and three floating lines with sink tips (S1, S3 and S5). The reel is the Eclipse 7/8 and the rod is the Lunar S2 Glass 3-weight at 7 feet. The maker's own site sells much more, including fly-tying materials, leaders and flies, which we do not track.
What do S1, S3 and S5 mean on Moonlit sink-tip lines?
They are the sink-rate codes in the product names. The listings give a sink rate in inches per second: 1.5 to 2.5 for the S1 intermediate tip, 2.5 to 4.0 for the S3 medium tip and 4.5 to 6.0 for the S5 fast tip. A higher number means the tip drops faster, which helps you get a fly down in deeper or faster water. The rates are taken from the listings.
What line weight is the Moonlit All-Purpose line?
The listing offers a range of line weights, from 2 to 10, as variants of one product, and the weight shown in our table is one of them. Choose the weight that matches your rod and check the variant you add to your cart, because the product page covers several.
Is the Moonlit Eclipse reel sealed?
The maker's product page describes a sealed drag with stainless steel and carbon discs, and a machined one-turn adjustment knob, on a machined die-cast frame. The Amazon listing we track is the 7/8 size, listed at 6.24 oz with a spool diameter of 3.74 inches and room for a WF7 line plus 164 yards of 20 lb backing.
Where is the Moonlit Eclipse reel made?
The maker's page is not consistent. The heading says it is made in Korea, while the feature list says made in the USA and adds that the ball bearings are made in Japan. I cannot reconcile those two statements from here, so check the listing and the box if country of origin matters to you.
What is the Moonlit warranty?
For its rods the maker's page describes a lifetime warranty with per-section replacement charges, plus a shipping charge within the continental United States. It is not a free replacement, so read the maker's terms before you buy. The maker's page does not give a warranty statement for lines or the reel, and we found none.
