How alternatives are pickedProducts of the same type from other brands, closest first: same price tier as Abel's own listings at our last check, then the most maker-published specs. No popularity, no paid placement.
Which Abel model, if any
Who Abel is
On the Mayfly Outdoors site, Abel's story page says the company was "established in 1980" and is headquartered in Montrose, Colorado, where its precision manufacturing facility and R&D lab are. A separate Abel page says every reel is designed, machined and assembled in Montrose. MidCurrent's 2013 article describes the company as founded as an independent machine job shop that made precision aerospace, computer and medical parts, which is a useful clue to why the reels look the way they do. I did not find a source that names the founders, so I will not.
The ownership picture is simple. MidCurrent reported that The Mayfly Group, LLC, which it calls a private investment firm, completed the purchase of Abel on December 31, 2012. Abel's pages now sit on the Mayfly Outdoors site, and Abel is listed there among the Mayfly Group's brands.
Abel on Amazon US
At our last check (October 2026) we found no Abel reels on Amazon US. I will not guess at why. What matters for you is that the table above is not a list of Abel reels. It is a list of 15 alternatives from other makers, picked because they are fly reels you can check on Amazon today. The next section explains how.
If you want an Abel reel, Abel's warranty page says the lifetime warranty applies to products bought from an authorized Abel dealer, and that auction sites and discount sellers do not provide a warranty. So before you buy an Abel reel anywhere, check the seller against Abel's dealer list, and keep the receipt.
What the series names tell you
Abel's page on the Mayfly Outdoors site lists six series: SDX (marked new), ROVE, VAYA, TR, SDF and SDS. The pages I read did not describe the drag type, construction or intended water for each one, so I will not guess from the names. What I can tell you from a retailer's page is the TR, below.
The Abel TR reel
The retailer page I read describes the TR as a trout-sized reel in three sizes:
| Size | Diameter | Arbor | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| TR 2/3 | 3.06 in | 1.72 in | 4.19 oz |
| TR 4/5 | 3.29 in | 1.96 in | 4.65 oz |
| TR 5/6 | 3.68 in | 2.22 in | 5.19 oz |
The drag is click-and-pawl: a stainless steel pawl engages a toothed gear to give consistent light resistance. The page says the reel has 21 machined parts, a large-arbor spool, and a clicker built into the spool, and it lists a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser. (A reel with 21 parts and a clicker is one of the few pieces of gear whose sales pitch is that it does less.)
Click-and-pawl is the traditional brake for light trout lines. It is simple and quiet. It does not give you the adjustable stopping power of a disc drag, so it suits fish that rarely strip line off the reel. Our click-and-pawl reels page lists others, and the trout reel page sets the type beside disc-drag options.
Abel's warranty
Abel's warranty page says its products carry a lifetime warranty that covers the repair or replacement of parts. It is for the original owner only and applies to products bought from an authorized Abel dealer. Abel decides whether a defect in material or workmanship is covered, and replacement parts for older models may come from current ones, with colors that differ. Structural damage from events like a reel flying off a roof rack, falling from a boat or being dropped from a height is not covered, though Abel says it will work with customers on a fair plan for unforeseen events.
For repairs, you send the product with a service form to Abel in Montrose. Normal turnaround is 4 to 6 weeks from receipt, and for repairs not covered by the warranty Abel provides a quote for approval first. If you plan to fish a lot, I would send a reel in during the off-season.
How we picked the alternatives
The table follows the site's rule for a brand with no products on Amazon US: same product type (fly reel), the same price tier or a higher one, and the most maker-confirmed specs. We do not show prices, and I do not have Abel pricing in our data, so the tier is a rough guide to where an Abel sits, not a match. The rule is not a ranking, and it does not say any of these reels is better or worse than an Abel. It only says these are fly reels you can check on Amazon, with specs we could mostly read from the maker.
Whichever you pick, match the reel's line weight range to your rod, and read the marks under each value. "Maker" means the maker's own page states it, "listing" means only the Amazon listing does, and "—" means we could not confirm it.
The alternatives, by maker
Sage. Six reels. The Click 4/5/6 is a forged-and-machined, ultra-large-arbor, click-and-pawl reel at 3 oz and 3.75 inches, the one alternative that shares the TR's kind of drag. The Trout 4/5/6 is a machined aluminum reel with a large arbor, a sealed carbon disc drag, 5.375 oz and a 3.5 inch diameter, and the Trout Spey 1/2/3 is the same family for two-handed rods. The Enforcer 9/10 and 11/12 and the Thermo 12-16 are forged and machined aluminum reels with sealed carbon disc drags, and maximum drag figures of 15, 17 and 20 pounds, weighing 10.8, 11.9 and 15.6 oz. These are saltwater or heavy-line reels; the Thermo's spec mentions a shooting head. See our Sage page.
Ross. The Evolution R 5/6 is a machined aluminum reel with an ultra-large arbor, a sealed carbon disc drag, 5.03 oz and a 3.78 inch diameter. The maker lists a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner, bought from an authorized dealer, covering repair or replacement only. See the Ross page.
Lamson. Six reels. The Speedster S -3+ and -5+ are machined, ultra-large-arbor reels with a sealed conical drag, at 3.26 and 3.83 oz. The Liquid Max 10 is a cast-and-machined ultra-large-arbor reel at 9.0 oz. The Guru X -9+ and the Arx II -11+ are fully machined, at 6.1 and 12.1 oz. A Guru X 2-Pack -3+ listing shares the small-reel specs; read the title to see what is in the pack. See the Lamson page.
Galvan. The Torque T-5 (4.8 oz) and T-8 (7.6 oz) are large-arbor carbon disc reels listed for all water, with the machined construction coming from the Amazon listing. The maker lists a lifetime warranty for the original owner, bought from an authorized dealer with registration or proof of purchase. See the Galvan page.
Reading the reel columns
Arbor. The arbor is the core of the spool. A large or ultra-large arbor means line comes off in looser coils and each turn of the handle retrieves more line. The Abel TR above lists arbors of 1.72 to 2.22 inches.
Drag. The Abel TR uses click-and-pawl. Most of the alternatives use a sealed carbon disc drag or a conical drag, both adjustable. A sealed drag keeps water, silt and salt out of the mechanism, which matters more on saltwater and silty rivers.
Weight. Weigh the reel against the rod. A light rod with a heavy reel feels tip-heavy, and a heavy rod with a light reel can feel the other way. The weights in the table are the maker's where marked.
Backing capacity. Makers usually give it as a line plus a length of backing, such as WF6 plus 100 yards of 20 pound. If you fish water where a fish can run, check that figure before you buy. Our fly reel size guide and the guide to how much backing goes on a fly reel show how to work it out.
Common mistakes
- Buying for the rod's weight and ignoring the range. A reel marked 4/5/6 will hold a 4-weight line, but the capacity changes with the line you load.
- Buying a heavy-line reel for a light rod. An Enforcer is a saltwater reel; it is not a small-stream reel.
- Treating a lifetime warranty as one thing. Abel's covers the original owner and requires an authorized dealer. Others differ.
How to choose
- A classic trout reel like the TR. The Sage Click is the only click-and-pawl reel in the table. For more, look at our click-and-pawl reels page.
- A trout reel with a sealed drag. The Sage Trout 4/5/6 or the Lamson Speedster S -5+.
- A reel for a 5 or 6 weight with the largest arbor on the list. The Ross Evolution R.
- Heavy saltwater lines. The Sage Enforcer or Thermo, which carry maximum drag figures.
- Something between. The Galvan Torque T-8 and the Lamson Guru X cover the 8 to 10 weight range.
For a wider look, the best fly reels page applies a plain rule to the whole field, and the saltwater reels page covers the heavy end. The fly reel size guide and the parts of a fly reel guide explain the words in the table.
If you buy an Abel somewhere else
- Check the seller. The warranty applies to products bought from an authorized dealer, and not to auction or discount sales.
- Check the size. Match the reel's line weight to your rod and check the backing capacity for your line.
- Check the series. Ask what drag and construction the series has, since this page cannot tell you for SDX, ROVE, VAYA, SDF or SDS.
- Check the spool. Ask whether a spare spool is included and whether it fits.
- Keep the receipt. Abel's warranty is for the original owner.
One last point on warranties
Four of the alternatives show how different "lifetime" can be. Ross lists a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner, bought from an authorized dealer, with repair or replacement only. Lamson lists a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner covering defects in material or workmanship, again repair or replacement. Sage lists an original-owner warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Galvan lists a lifetime warranty for the original owner, with an authorized-dealer purchase and registration or proof of purchase. None of these is a promise to replace a reel you dropped off a boat. Read the wording for the reel you pick, and keep the receipt where you can find it in a year.

Questions about Abel
Does Amazon sell Abel fly reels?
Not in our data. At our last check (October 2026) we found no Abel reels on Amazon US, so the table above lists alternatives from other makers. Abel's own warranty page says the lifetime warranty applies to products bought from an authorized dealer, so check that the seller is one before you pay for an Abel reel anywhere.
Where are Abel reels made?
Abel's parent group page says every reel is designed, machined and assembled in Montrose, Colorado. A retailer's page for the TR repeats it as Made in Montrose, Colorado, USA.
What is the Abel TR reel?
The TR is a trout-sized reel. The retailer page we read lists three sizes covering 2- to 6-weight lines, a click-and-pawl drag in which a stainless steel pawl engages a toothed gear, a large-arbor spool and a clicker built into the spool. The sizes are TR 2/3 at 4.19 oz, TR 4/5 at 4.65 oz and TR 5/6 at 5.19 oz. Check Abel's own page for current details.
What other Abel series are there?
Abel's page on the Mayfly Outdoors site lists the series SDX, ROVE, VAYA, TR, SDF and SDS. The pages we read did not describe the drag, construction or intended water for them, so we do not guess.
Does Abel offer a warranty?
Abel's warranty page says its products carry a lifetime warranty covering repair or replacement of parts. It is for the original owner only, applies to products bought from an authorized Abel dealer, and does not cover structural damage from events like a reel falling from a roof rack or a boat. Normal turnaround for a repair is 4 to 6 weeks from receipt.
Who owns Abel?
MidCurrent reported that The Mayfly Group, LLC, a private investment firm, completed the purchase of Abel on December 31, 2012. Abel's current series page sits on the Mayfly Outdoors site, where Abel is listed among the Mayfly Group's brands.
