Which Sage model, if any
Who Sage is
Far Bank's company history says Sage was founded in 1980 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Don Green, with the idea of building high-performance fishing equipment as an alternative to mass-produced products. It describes him as an early champion of graphite in rod manufacturing, working with a partner who came from a ski company, and says Jay Green bought Sage from Don Green and its original investors in 1994. In 2003 Jay Green purchased Redington, and in 2005, when RIO joined, Far Bank Enterprises was formed as the holding company for the three brands. Today Far Bank describes a family of brands that includes Sage, Redington, RIO Products and Fly Water Travel.
The same history says the Redington purchase let Sage stay focused on domestic fly rod innovation and production at its Bainbridge Island manufacturing headquarters. All of this is Far Bank's own account of itself, and the Redington side of the story is on our Redington page.
(Search for plain "sage" and you will meet an herb, a software company and a great deal of stuffing. Add "fly rod" and the herb leaves.)
Sage on Amazon US: reels, not rods
At our last check (October 2026) we track 15 Sage products on Amazon US, and every one is a fly reel. There are no Sage rods or outfits. I do not know why and I will not invent a reason. If you want a Sage rod, the maker and its dealers are the route. A dealer's Sage page names the Power R8, Sonic, Foundation, Igniter, Dart and Payload among the rod families, which tells you the names but not the specifications, and I have no data on them to share here. I also noticed that the Spectrum C reel was listed without a purchasable offer at our check, so it is not in the table.
To keep this page useful, the table shows the 15 Sage reels first and then 15 fly rods from other brands, clearly labelled as alternatives. The rods are picked by rule: 4- to 6-weight single-handed rods, from the same price tiers as the Sage reels, with the most maker-confirmed specs first. They come from Temple Fork Outfitters, Lamson, Redington, Thomas & Thomas, St. Croix, Fenwick, Greys and Hardy. They are not copies of any Sage rod and I make no claim that they perform alike. Most are listed for freshwater or all water, so the Water column is still worth a glance.
A reminder of the marks under each value. "Maker" means the manufacturer's own page states it. "Claimed" is a manufacturer claim with no named standard. "Listing" is taken from the Amazon listing only. A dash means we could not confirm the value, and we do not guess.
The Sage reels
Sage's reels on Amazon fall into six families.
Click. A forged-and-machined, ultra-large-arbor, click-and-pawl reel. The 4/5/6 is listed at 3 oz, 3.75 inches in diameter, with room for a WF6 line plus 100 yards of 20 lb backing and a convertible retrieve. A click-and-pawl reel uses a spring-loaded pawl against a gear for a light check, and suits light lines and small fish. See click-and-pawl fly reels.
Trout. A machined, large-arbor reel with a sealed carbon disc drag, the 4/5/6 at 5.375 oz and 3.5 inches. A disc drag presses plates together to resist a running fish with adjustable force, and the maker lists this one as sealed.
Arbor XL. Forged and machined, ultra-large arbor, sealed carbon disc drag, in 4/5/6 (4.5 oz, 4.125 inches) and 6/7/8 (6.5 oz, 4.5 inches). The ultra-large arbor means the spool core is wide: line comes off in looser coils and each turn takes in more line. The 6/7/8 holds a WF8 line plus 200 yards of 20 lb backing.
Shift and Shift LT. Forged and machined, large arbor, sealed carbon disc drag, convertible retrieve, listed for all water. We track the Shift in 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10, and the Shift LT in 3/4 and 5/6. We have no weights for these, so look at the diameter and backing capacity in the table. The 9/10 holds a WF10 line plus 200 yards of 30 lb backing.
Enforcer and Thermo. The heavy saltwater and big-game reels. The Enforcer 9/10 and 11/12 are forged and machined with a sealed carbon disc drag, a stated maximum drag of 15 and 17 lb, weights of 10.8 and 11.9 oz and backing capacities of 200 and 300 yards of 30 lb. The Thermo 12-16 goes further, with a maximum drag of 20 lb, 15.6 oz and a 5.2 inch diameter, and capacity for a 550-grain shooting head with a running line and backing. These are reels for flats, inshore work and heavy line weights. See saltwater fly reels.
Trout Spey and Spey II. Machined, large-arbor, sealed-carbon-disc reels for two-handed rods. The Trout Spey 1/2/3 is 5.75 oz and the Spey II 5/6/7 is 9.438 oz, with capacities given for Skagit-style lines (a short, heavy line used for sink tips and heavy flies on a two-handed rod) plus backing. See what a spey rod is if the term is new.
Reading the reel columns
The Arbor column tells you how wide the spool core is. The Drag column tells you whether the drag is a click-and-pawl or a disc, and whether the maker lists it as sealed. The Weight column is the one to compare within a line-weight range, because a reel that is heavier than its rod wants will pull the tip down. The Water column says whether the maker lists the reel for fresh water, salt water or all water.
For the rods, the Action column matters more than any other. A fast or extra-fast rod bends mostly near the tip and suits wind, distance and heavy flies, and a medium-fast rod flexes deeper and forgives slower timing. Our fly rod action guide explains the scale, and the best fly rods page gives a rule-based list.
The alternative rods, by use
Every alternative rod is a 4-, 5- or 6-weight, which is the range of the Sage Click, Trout, Arbor XL and Shift reels in the table. The list is short on purpose: the point is a rod you could put one of those reels on, not a survey of the market.
Fast rods. The Temple Fork Outfitters Axiom II-X 5-weight (extra-fast, 9 feet, listed for all water), the Lamson Velocity 5-weight (fast, 9 feet, all water), the Thomas & Thomas Zone 6-weight (fast, 9 feet, freshwater) and the Redington EDC 5- and 6-weights (fast, 10 feet) bend mostly in the top half and suit wind and longer casts. The Thomas & Thomas Sextant 6-weight is a fast 9-foot rod listed for saltwater, the one salt rod in this group. The St. Croix Imperial USA Switch is a fast 11-foot 5-weight, which puts it in the longer, two-handed-friendly switch category rather than a standard trout rod.
Medium-fast rods. The Temple Fork Outfitters Blue Ribbon 6-weight (9 feet, freshwater), the Lamson Radius 5-weight (10 feet, per the Amazon listing), the Fenwick AETOS in 4- and 5-weights (8 and 8 feet 6 inches), the Greys Kite 5- and 6-weights (9 feet and 8 feet, with line weights taken from the Amazon listing) and the Hardy Aydon 4-weights (8 feet 6 inches and 10 feet) flex deeper into the blank. They forgive slower timing and suit short casts on small and medium streams.
I would not read the lists as a ranking. If you own a Sage reel, the only sensible filter is line weight: match the reel's range to the rod's number, then pick the action you cast best.
Balancing reel and rod
A reel also balances the rod. Put the reel on the rod with the line threaded, hold the rod at the grip with one finger under it and see whether it hangs close to level. A 9-foot 5-weight is happy with a 4 to 6 weight reel in the 3 to 5.4 oz range, and a heavy saltwater line wants a reel closer to the Enforcer's 10 to 12 oz. If the tip dips, the reel is too light for the rod; if the butt dips, it is too heavy. The weights in the table make this a quick check, which is one more reason to look at the Weight column before the name on the reel.
Warranty
Sage's warranty page says every new Sage rod and reel purchased through an authorized dealer is covered by an original-owner warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. It is limited to repair or replacement, and it does not cover misuse, neglect, normal wear, fire, theft, lost rod sections, intentional breakage or modification. Sage may replace discontinued models with comparable ones, and parts or colors may differ. For a claim you send the entire product, freight paid and insured, to the Bainbridge Island address given in the online repair process. Out-of-warranty breakage can be repaired or replaced for a fee in some cases, and some items are no longer repairable. For the full picture, see our Sage fly rod warranty guide.
The phrase "through an authorized dealer" is worth a second look if you are buying on Amazon. Check the seller name on the listing and, if the warranty matters, ask the maker whether that seller is authorized.
How to choose
Start with the rod you own or plan to buy, and match the reel to its line weight. For small trout streams and light lines, the Click and the Arbor XL are the lightest reels in the table. For general trout and bass work, the Trout, the Arbor XL 4/5/6 and the Shift cover a 5-weight line. For saltwater, look at the Enforcer and Thermo for sealed drags and maximum drag figures. For the alternative rods, decide on line weight and action before brand. The common mistakes are buying a reel for the rod you hope to own, ignoring backing capacity and assuming a sealed drag is a replacement for rinsing the reel after salt water. For other brands, see the fly reels and fly rods pages.

Questions about Sage
Are Sage fly rods sold on Amazon?
Not in our data. At our last check (October 2026) we found Sage reels on Amazon US, 15 of them, and no Sage fly rods or rod-and-reel outfits that we could confirm. I do not know why, and I will not guess. Sage rods are sold through the maker and its dealers; one dealer's Sage page names the Power R8, Sonic, Foundation, Igniter, Dart and Payload among them.
Does the Sage warranty cover reels bought on Amazon?
Sage's warranty page says every new Sage rod and reel purchased through an authorized dealer is covered by an original-owner warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. It is limited to repair or replacement. We cannot tell from here which Amazon sellers are authorized dealers, so check the seller and ask the maker if the warranty matters to you.
What is the difference between the Sage Shift and Shift LT reels?
Both are forged-and-machined aluminum reels with a large arbor, a sealed carbon disc drag and a convertible retrieve in our data. They share some sizes (3/4 and 5/6) and differ in name, and we have no weights for either, so I cannot say which is lighter. Compare the diameter and backing capacity in the table, and read the maker's page for each.
Is the Sage Click a good fly reel?
I do not test reels, so I can only compare the published numbers. The Click 4/5/6 is a forged-and-machined ultra-large-arbor click-and-pawl reel, listed at 3 oz with a 3.75 inch diameter and a WF6 line plus 100 yards of 20 lb backing. It suits light lines and small fish. For fish that run, a disc drag such as the Trout or Arbor XL is the better match.
What fly rod is closest to a Sage?
I do not think any rod in the table is a stand-in for a Sage. The alternatives are 4- to 6-weight rods from the same price tiers as the Sage reels, with the most maker-confirmed specs first. For a fast freshwater rod, the Temple Fork Outfitters Axiom II-X 5-weight is extra-fast and the Lamson Velocity 5-weight is fast. For a more forgiving feel, the Blue Ribbon 6-weight is medium-fast. Check line weight and action first.
Where are Sage rods made?
Far Bank's company history says Sage's Bainbridge Island, Washington headquarters is where it focuses on domestic fly rod innovation and production, and that Redington's manufacturing is done overseas. It does not say where each Sage reel is made.
What is the Sage Foundation fly rod?
It is one of the rod families a dealer lists for Sage. It is not on Amazon US in our data, so I have nothing on its specifications. Look at the maker's page for the model you want.
