How alternatives are pickedProducts of the same type from other brands, closest first: same price tier as Nautilus's own listings at our last check, then the most maker-published specs. No popularity, no paid placement.

Which Nautilus model, if any

Sage Enforcer 9/10

Good day on the water for

a 9- or 10-weight saltwater rod on flats or inshore water, where the maker lists a forged-and-machined aluminum reel with a sealed carbon disc drag, a 15 lb maximum drag and a WF10 line plus 200 yards of 30 lb backing.

Leave it on the shelf if

you want a light reel, because it is listed at about 10.8 oz.

See it on Amazon

Ross Reels Evolution R 5/6

Good day on the water for

a 5- or 6-weight rod on trout or light saltwater, with a machined ultra-large-arbor reel with a sealed carbon disc drag at 5.03 oz.

Leave it on the shelf if

you buy outside an authorized dealer, since the maker's limited lifetime warranty is listed for the original owner and an authorized-dealer purchase.

See it on Amazon

Galvan Torque T-5

Good day on the water for

a 5- or 6-weight rod when you want a large-arbor reel with a carbon disc drag at 4.8 oz and a 3.5 inch diameter, listed for all water.

Leave it on the shelf if

you want the construction confirmed by the maker, because the machined frame comes from the Amazon listing, or you buy outside an authorized dealer, since the maker's lifetime warranty names one.

Lamson Guru X -9+

Good day on the water for

an 8- to 10-weight rod on bigger rivers or light saltwater, with a machined large-arbor reel with a sealed conical drag at 6.1 oz and room for a WF10 line plus 220 yards of 30 lb backing.

Leave it on the shelf if

you fish a 5-weight, where it is far more reel than you need.

Who Nautilus is

Nautilus Reels is a Miami, Florida fly reel maker. Its About page says every reel is designed, machined, anodized and assembled in-house in Miami, cut from bar stock aluminum, and it makes a point of saying nothing is imported. The page describes its main idea as replacing the cork drag, which it calls the standard for decades, with sealed disc brake systems that need less maintenance.

On the family behind it, I have only a secondary source. A 2015 post on the Oregon Fly Fishing Blog, written after a factory visit, says Kristen Mustad showed the writers around and describes the company as coming from the Mustad family of Norwegian metal-parts makers, O. Mustad & Søn, founded in 1832. I could not find a primary source for the founding year of Nautilus Reels itself, and other directories give different years, so I am not offering one.

(Nautilus is also the name of a submarine and a gym machine. The reel is neither, though it is built to cope with salt water.)

Nautilus on Amazon US

At our last check (October 2026) we track no Nautilus products on Amazon US. We have not found out why, and I will not invent a reason. What that means for you is practical: if you want a Nautilus reel you will buy from the maker or from a dealer, and the maker's site lists a dealer locator for that purpose. If you would rather buy on Amazon, the table above shows 15 reels from other brands that are listed there.

Those 15 are labelled as alternatives. I picked them by a simple rule: the same type (fly reels), the same price tier or a higher one, and the most specifications stated by the maker. They come from four brands, Sage, Ross, Lamson and Galvan, and they cover trout-sized reels up to heavy saltwater and spey sizes. They are not copies of any Nautilus model, and I make no claim that they perform alike. The table lets you compare the numbers that matter: arbor, drag, weight and warranty.

What Nautilus says about its reels

The maker's site groups its reels into three series: GT, CCF-X2 and X. Its Technology page describes the ideas behind them in the maker's own words, and all of it is the maker's claim, and none of it is a test result of ours.

ActivSeal. A machined proprietary seal that the maker says keeps water, sand, salt and other contaminants out of the brakes and bearings. The maker says it is featured in all current Nautilus reels.

Pentadrag. A braking system the maker describes as three fixed and three free-floating carbon fiber surfaces, driven by a pentagonal gear plate to apply even pressure across the drag surfaces.

CCF-X2 disc braking system. The maker describes an upgraded version of an earlier cork-and-carbon brake, with twice the drag surface in a dual-action configuration and hybrid ceramic bearings. It says the brake can be switched between right-hand and left-hand retrieve.

Drag knobs. The maker describes the GripTorq knob on its GT reels and the InfinAdjust knob on the CCF-X2, which it says takes you from zero to more than 20 lb of drag in six turns.

I can give you the claims, but not a measurement of any of them. The numbers a maker states for a drag, such as maximum drag in pounds, also depend on how and where they were measured, which is rarely stated. Treat them as a way to compare reels from one maker, and be careful comparing across makers.

If you buy a Nautilus elsewhere

A few practical points, drawn from the maker's own pages.

Reading the alternatives table

Every value in the table has a small mark under it. "Maker" means the manufacturer's own page states it. "Claimed" is a manufacturer claim with no named standard. "Listing" is taken from the Amazon listing only. A dash means we could not confirm the value, and we do not guess.

For reels, the columns are these.

Line weight is the gauge: the range of line weights the reel is built for. A "4/5/6" reel handles line weights 4 to 6.

Arbor is the width of the spool core. A large or ultra-large arbor takes line off in looser coils and retrieves more line per turn of the handle.

Drag is how the reel resists a running fish. A disc drag presses plates together and is smooth and strong. A conical drag is a variation using cone-shaped surfaces. Sealed means the maker says it is protected from water and grit.

Reel weight is in ounces from the maker. Compare reels of the same line weight range, because a heavier reel is not worse if it balances a longer or heavier rod.

Water says whether the maker lists the reel for fresh water, salt water or all water. Warranty is the maker's wording.

The alternatives, by use

Saltwater and big fish. The Sage Enforcer in 9/10 and 11/12 sizes and the Thermo 12-16 are forged-and-machined aluminum reels with a sealed carbon disc drag. The data lists maximum drag of 15, 17 and 20 pounds respectively, backing capacities of 200 to 400 yards or more, and weights from about 10.8 oz to 15.6 oz. The Thermo is for very heavy lines and shooting heads. These are reels for flats and inshore work, and the Thermo points toward big game and two-handed fishing. See saltwater fly reels.

Trout and light saltwater. The Ross Evolution R 5/6 is a machined ultra-large-arbor reel with a sealed carbon disc drag at 5.03 oz. The Sage Trout 4/5/6 is a machined large-arbor reel with a carbon disc drag at 5.375 oz. The Galvan Torque T-5 is a large-arbor carbon disc reel at 4.8 oz and 3.5 inches, listed for all water, with the machined construction coming from the Amazon listing. The Lamson Speedster S comes in a -3+ (2 to 4 weight, 3.26 oz) and a -5+ (4 to 6 weight, 3.83 oz), both ultra-large-arbor, machined, with a sealed conical drag. The Guru X 2-Pack -3+ is a set, which is why you should read the title of that row before you click.

Bigger rivers and heavier lines. The Galvan Torque T-8 is an 8-weight reel at 7.6 oz with a 200 yard backing figure. The Lamson Guru X -9+ is a machined 8-to-10-weight reel at 6.1 oz with a sealed conical drag and room for a WF10 line plus 220 yards of 30 lb backing. The Liquid Max 10 is a cast-and-machined ultra-large-arbor reel at 9 oz, and the Arx II 10 to 12 is a machined reel at 12.1 oz, which the data lists with a backing capacity for a WF12 line plus 350 yards of 30 lb backing.

How to choose between them

Start with the rod. Choose the reel whose line weight range includes your rod's line weight, and make sure the backing capacity suits the fish you expect. For small trout streams, weight is the main variable: the lighter ultra-large-arbor reels sit near 3 to 5 oz. For salt water, a sealed drag, corrosion resistance and a high backing capacity matter more than a few ounces.

The common mistakes are choosing a reel for the rod you hope to own, ignoring backing capacity, and assuming a sealed drag is a substitute for rinsing. It is not. See parts of a fly reel for what each piece does, and our best fly reels list for a rule-based selection.

Balancing a reel to a rod

A reel does a second job besides holding line: it balances the rod. A heavy reel on a light rod makes the tip dip and tires the wrist, and a very light reel on a long rod can leave the rod butt-heavy in front. The usual test is to put the reel on the rod with the line threaded, hold the rod at the grip with one finger and see whether it hangs level or close to it. Nautilus, like most makers of light reels, builds reels in several sizes so each rod weight has a reel to suit it. The same logic applies to the alternatives: the 4/5/6 and 5/6 trout reels in the table weigh roughly 3.8 to 5.4 oz, and a reel in that range suits most 9-foot 5-weight rods. A 9-foot 8-weight can carry a reel of 6 to 8 oz.

Questions to ask before you buy any reel

Does the line weight range include my line? How much backing does the reel hold, and is that enough for the fish I expect? Does the maker list the drag as sealed, and if I fish salt water, is the reel listed for it? Can I swap the retrieve direction? Who is covered by the warranty, and does it require an authorized-dealer purchase, as the maker's wording for the Ross reel does? A dash in the table usually means the answer is not on the maker's page, so those are the questions to put to the seller.

Where Nautilus shows up

Questions about Nautilus

Are Nautilus fly reels sold on Amazon?

Not in our data. At our last check (October 2026) we found no live Nautilus listings on Amazon US that we could confirm, and we do not know the reason, so I will not guess at one. The maker's own site lists its reels, a dealer locator, a reel registration page and a warranty and repairs page, which is where I would start.

Can you use a Nautilus reel in fresh water?

Yes. The maker's FAQ says you can use all Nautilus reels in salt water, and says nothing that limits them to it. The maker's materials describe its sealed disc brake systems as suited to both saltwater and freshwater fishing.

What does a sealed drag mean?

The maker's FAQ defines it as a drag system protected from water, sand and dirt. That matters most in salt water, where corrosion can quickly damage an unsealed reel. In the table, the Drag column tells you whether the maker lists a drag as sealed; a dash means we could not confirm it.

How do I look after a Nautilus reel after salt water?

The maker's FAQ advises washing the reel in the sink or with a garden hose using no more pressure than you would use to wash your hands, because strong pressure drives salt deeper into the backing. Take the spool off and rinse it, lightly wash the frame, and let everything dry thoroughly, and do not store the reel wet. The maker suggests leaving the reel in a warm place for about a week before it is packed up.

Which Amazon reels are closest to a Nautilus?

For saltwater, the Sage Enforcer and Thermo are the heavy sealed-drag reels in our table, and the Lamson Liquid Max, Guru X and Arx II are the large-arbor sealed-drag options for bigger rivers and lighter saltwater work. For trout, the Ross Evolution R, the Sage Trout, the Galvan Torque T-5 and the Lamson Speedster S are the closest. None is a copy of a Nautilus, and the table lets you compare weight, arbor and drag.

Where are Nautilus reels made?

Nautilus says it designs, machines, anodizes and assembles every reel in Miami, Florida, in-house, from aluminum bar stock. That is the maker's own statement on its About page.
