What Weight Fly Rod for Redfish, Bonefish and Tarpon

For redfish, an 8-weight fly rod is the usual choice, with a 9-weight for wind, heavy flies and bull reds. Bonefish sit in the same 7 to 9 range, and tarpon move up to 10, 11 or 12. Saltwater rod weights depend on the fish, the fly and the wind, so this guide gives the ranges that published sources use, explains when to step up a size, and shows where to look at saltwater rods on Amazon US.

The short answer

Redfish: an 8-weight. Step to a 9 for wind, big flies or big fish. Bonefish: an 8 also, with a 7 for delicate presentations. Tarpon: 10 to 12, depending on how big the fish are and where you are.

Yellow Dog Fly Fishing calls the 8-weight the preferred size for redfish in the Carolinas, down into Florida and most of Texas, and a go-to for bonefish. Tackle Village's table puts bonefish and redfish at 7 to 9 and tarpon at 10 to 12. Saltwater rods are listed on the saltwater fly rods page, and the 8-weight rods page lists the most common size.

Redfish

Yellow Dog says the 8-weight is not the go-to for Louisiana's large marsh redfish, so the answer depends on the fish where you are. It lists reasons to step up to a 9:

For how the fishing works, see our fly fishing for redfish guide. (A rod marked "for redfish" in a listing is a suggestion. The redfish has not seen the listing.)

Bonefish

Yellow Dog says the 8-weight handles everything from unweighted flies to medium lead eyes, and a 7-weight is an option for more delicate presentations. It adds that most permit anglers prefer a 9-weight, though an 8 suits slick or skinny-water conditions. Tackle Village puts bonefish at 7 to 9, so a 7 or 9 is within the range either way.

Tarpon

Tarpon is where the range opens. Tackle Village gives 10 to 12. Trident Fly Fishing writes about adult tarpon of 100 pounds and more, not baby tarpon from the backcountry, and treats 10, 11 and 12 as the options:

Length

Tackle Village says flats rods should be nine feet, which keeps the line low and out of the wind, and that other saltwater situations may call for a longer rod. See fly rod length for the trade-off.

Why the 8-weight keeps coming up

Yellow Dog's "best for" list for the 8-weight is long: bonefish, shallow-water permit, East Coast redfish, single-hand steelhead and salmon, peacock bass, schoolie striped bass, snook, juvenile tarpon, and freshwater use with heavy sinking lines. It calls the 8 a sweet spot of power and finesse and a sensible next step for anglers moving beyond trout. That is the reason it is the first saltwater rod most people buy: it covers many fish without being tiring to cast. The cost is that it runs out of power on large fish and heavy flies, which is what the step to a 9 or 10 is for.

Saltwater details a weight does not tell you

A rod weight is one number. Saltwater adds three more things to check:

Rinse everything after salt. That is my advice, not a quotation: salt is hard on every moving part.

How to choose

Tackle Village's advice is to choose by species first, then consider conditions. Browse saltwater fly rods when you know the species.
