What's in this tableWading boots with a felt sole, or sold with felt as an option. Check your state's rules — some ban felt soles.
What the list covers
The list above applies one rule: the boot's sole is felt, or the model is sold with a choice of felt or rubber, or it has an interchangeable sole system. We include those last two because a buyer can end up with felt on the bottom. A boot with a plain rubber sole is not in this list, and that is on purpose. At our last check (October 2026) there were 31 boots that matched, from ten brands.
Not everything on it is a classic wading boot. One listing is a hip boot that comes with a felt or rubber option, and I'd skip it unless that is what you want. The rest are wading boots and wading shoes designed to be worn over the neoprene feet of stockingfoot waders. If you are new to that pairing, the main wading boots page explains the basics, and the stockingfoot waders page covers the other half.
Check your state's rules first
This is the most important section on the page, and it is short on purpose. Some states and waters restrict or prohibit felt-soled wading footwear. Others do not. Rules differ, they change, and a rule that applies in one state does not mean it applies in the next. I do not list which states do what here, because the only reliable source is the fish and wildlife agency of the place you plan to fish.
What I'd do before buying: check your state's fishing regulations, look for any rule about wading footwear or about specific rivers, and do that again if you travel. If you fish in several places, a boot that lets you change soles or accepts a rubber alternative is the lower-risk purchase. If the rule says no, the boots in this list are not for that water.
Why anglers chose felt in the first place
Felt is soft and fibrous. On wet stone covered with algae, it moulds to the surface and holds on in a way that smooth rubber does not. That is the reason it spread through river fishing, and the reason people still ask for it. It is not magic: the grip comes from conforming to rock, so it does less on loose gravel and mud, and it is not a winter sole.
The costs are the other half of the story. Felt soaks up water, so the boot is heavier when wet and takes longer to dry. It wears down faster than rubber, and a worn sole slips. The answer to that is to inspect it, not to wait for a failure on a ledge. Our felt vs rubber wading boots guide compares the two soles in more detail.
Felt, felt or rubber option, interchangeable: the three kinds in the table
The Sole column in the table has three different values that can look alike, so here is what each one means.
- Felt means the model has a felt sole. In our data, 14 of the boots across the wider boot table are straight felt. Examples include the Orvis men's Clearwater felt version, the Simms Freestone and Tributary felt boots, the Paramount Slate and Stonefly felt boots, and several from 8 Fans, AC Allen and Caddis.
- Felt or rubber option means the same model is sold in both soles, or the listing offers both. 11 boots in the wider table fall in this group, mostly from frogg toggs, with some from Orvis, Redington and Kylebooker. Read the variant on the Amazon page before you buy, because the picture on the page and the sole you are buying can differ.
- Interchangeable means the boot has a system for changing the sole. These are the Korkers models, 6 in all, and they usually come with studded options as well. This is the most flexible answer if you fish in more than one place, and it comes with a bit more to carry and keep track of.
Where the Amazon listing is the only source, the table shows a listing mark under the value. That applies to several of the cheaper felt boots, so treat the sole as the seller's statement. A dash means we could not confirm the sole at all.
How to read the other columns
The columns are Model, Sole, Closure, Style, Fit, Weight and Warranty.
- Closure is how the boot tightens: laces, speed laces, a BOA dial, or something else. Plain laces are easy to fix. Speed laces are quicker to pull snug. A BOA dial is fast with cold fingers, but if it fails you need the maker's replacement.
- Style says whether the product is a wading boot, a wet wading shoe or a hip boot. The hip boot in this list is the exception, and the rest are wading boots.
- Fit is the gender cut: men's, women's, unisex, or a dash where it is not stated.
- Weight is shown only where the maker publishes it. Felt boots are often heavier when wet, so a published dry weight is only part of the picture. Weights are mostly given per pair. Read the note under the model name.
- Warranty is the maker's wording where we found it. For felt boots, the range goes from 60 days to a lifetime guarantee, and many have a dash. A sole is a wear item, so a defect warranty will not cover ordinary wear.
The table also uses maker, claimed, listing and — marks. Maker means the value comes from the manufacturer's own page, listing means the Amazon page only, claimed marks a manufacturer's claim without independent proof, and a dash means we could not confirm it. Under each model name, the "More specs" toggle shows the upper material, drainage and size range where we have them. The table can be filtered by brand and sorted by any column.
Studs, felt and the boat
In our data, felt boots that accept studs include several Simms, Orvis, Paramount and Kylebooker models, plus frogg toggs Pilot II. Studs give a felt sole extra bite on bare rock. They also make walking on smooth surfaces louder and slipperier, and they can scratch boat floors, docks and rental equipment. If you fish from a boat or with a guide, ask first. Metal studs are also one more thing to replace as they wear, so factor that in.
Fit and sizing
Size ranges across the felt boots run from about size 4 to size 16, depending on the model. Some models list a range only at one end, and a few list no range at all, so check the maker's page. We do not copy size charts. Where we found a maker chart, it is linked from the model's entry in the table, for example for Simms, Orvis and Paramount.
The usual fit advice for wading boots applies to felt ones: the boot goes over a neoprene wader foot, often with a sock, so the size that fits a street shoe may feel tight. Try the boots on with the waders and socks you will wear, and check the maker's chart for the exact model. Buyer feedback on fit varies by model and we do not have enough consistent data to say more. Our wader size chart guide covers how to measure.
A felt sole also changes how a boot feels when it is worn out. A sole that has compressed unevenly can make you walk crooked, so look at the soles before every season, not only when something goes wrong.
Choosing between them
Start with the water. If the rules where you fish allow felt, and you wade slick bedrock rivers, a felt boot is a sensible choice. If you hike in on gravel and mud, or fish several states, a rubber or interchangeable sole gives you more room to change your mind. If you cannot confirm the rules, do not buy felt on a hope.
Then weigh the rest: closure, weight, fit and warranty. If you are on a budget, you will see some of the cheaper felt boots from 8 Fans, AC Allen and Kylebooker in the table, and they have fewer confirmed specs. A short list of dashes is not an insult, but it does mean you are taking more on trust. A brand with a published warranty and size chart takes some of that risk away.
One more point. A felt sole is not a replacement for care. A pair dried in a hot trunk and stored damp in a bag will not last, and the soles will tell you about it by smell first. (Felt keeps what you give it.)
Care
Rinse your boots after each trip, scrub the soles to remove mud and plant material, and let them dry completely before you pack them. Felt is slow to dry, so give it extra time. If you fish different waters, clean and dry between trips. Replace worn laces, studs and soles before they fail on a ledge. Do not store boots wet in a bag.

Questions to ask before you buy felt
- Do the rules where I fish allow it? Check your state's fishing regulations and any rule for the specific water.
- Does the listing show the sole I am buying, or only a photo of one variant? Open the variant.
- Will I fish from a boat or with a guide who has footwear rules? Ask them.
- Can I swap to rubber if the rules change? An interchangeable or felt-or-rubber model gives you that option.
- What does the warranty say about the sole? Most defect warranties exclude wear.
- Is the size range printed, and does it match mine? Check the maker's chart.

Questions people ask
What are felt sole wading boots?
They are wading boots with a felt layer on the outsole instead of (or in addition to) rubber. The felt is a dense, absorbent fibre that conforms to wet stone and grips algae-covered rock. The upper, the laces and the ankle support are the same family of parts you find on any wading boot.
Are felt sole wading boots banned?
Some places restrict or prohibit felt soles, and others do not. Rules differ by state and sometimes by water, and they can change. We do not list the rules here, because the only safe source is the fish and wildlife agency where you will fish. Check your state's fishing regulations before you buy and again before each trip to new water.
Felt or rubber: which is better?
Neither wins everywhere. Felt grips slick, algae-covered stone better, but it absorbs water, dries slowly, wears faster and may not be allowed where you fish. Rubber is allowed more widely, lasts longer and grips well on gravel and dry rock, especially with studs added. Our felt vs rubber guide goes through the trade-offs.
What does felt or rubber option mean in the table?
It means the model is sold with either sole, or the listing offers both. Amazon often groups several variants under one page, so read the variant you are about to buy. Our table shows what the maker or the listing says about the sole, and a dash means we could not confirm it.
Can I add studs to a felt sole?
Many felt boots are listed as stud-compatible, meaning they take metal studs you buy separately. In this table that applies to several Orvis, Paramount, Simms and Kylebooker models. Studs add bite on bare rock and slick surfaces, and they can scratch boat floors, so ask before wearing them in a boat.
How long does a felt sole last?
We do not have lab or wear-test data, and makers do not publish lifespans. What is known in general is that felt compresses and wears down with use, and that a sole that stays wet in a bag breaks down sooner. Dry it fully between trips, and treat a worn sole as a safety issue rather than a cosmetic one.
Do interchangeable soles include felt?
Some systems accept felt as one of several soles. In our data the interchangeable boots are Korkers models, and the table includes them because the sole can be swapped. Check which sole comes in the box, since the listing for a given variant may not include the felt one.
