Which First Lite model, if any
Who First Lite is
First Lite is a hunting apparel and gear company founded by Kenton Carruth and Scott Robinson, who had worked in the winter sports industry in central Idaho. The maker's own page says it makes merino wool base layers and synthetic outerwear, and it also lists packs, footwear, field gear, camping gear and game calls. It describes its goal as making the best apparel for the hunter. The page gives no founding year, so I will not supply one.
Press coverage adds the ownership story. A June 2019 press release from Bozeman, Montana announced that MeatEater, Inc. was buying First Lite, with the co-founders staying on as co-presidents. A local travel article dates the same purchase to 2018, so I am treating the year as unsettled. The maker's page places the company in Hailey, Idaho, and the press release says Ketchum, both in the Wood River Valley. I did not find a more recent ownership statement, so treat all of this as background, not as current fact.
What First Lite sells in waders
The product behind the search is the Forge, First Lite's waterfowl wader. The maker's page describes:
- a one-piece design with a single continuous inseam, which it presents as a way to cut failure points;
- a 4.5-layer nylon body fabric, waterproof and breathable;
- a submersible YKK Aquaseal center-front zipper;
- internally bonded neoprene knee pads;
- an exclusive 14-inch LaCrosse Alpha boot with a Vibram outsole, 1,000 g of PrimaLoft Gold insulation, and mapped Aerogel insulation through the seat;
- a listed weight of 9.5 lb;
- Hypalon MOLLE platforms on the chest, magnetic self-draining hand pockets, a wading belt and elastic suspenders.
The page also states the product is made with PFAS chemicals. That will matter to some buyers and not others, but you should know before you buy. The Forge page links to a warranty page but does not state the terms on the product page itself.
The Forge is not in our Amazon US data at our last check (October 2026), so I cannot show you a table row or a listing link for it. If you want it, go to the maker. If you want a bootfoot wader on Amazon, our bootfoot waders page and the duck hunting waders page list what we can confirm.
The one First Lite product we track on Amazon US
Men's Migrator Wader Jacket. The maker describes it as a waterproof waterfowl jacket for hunting in waders, with a shorter cut for wading. Its numbers, from the maker's page:
- Body fabric: 4.5-layer waterproof, with 133 g of PrimaLoft Gold insulation.
- Weight: 46 oz.
- Temperature range: 20 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Fit: 19-inch torso length, an adjustable four-point drop hood and a dual-cinch wading belt.
- Water protection: a watertight folding cuff (patent pending), a waterproof hem liner and waterproof magnetic dump pockets for shotshells.
- Pockets: a water-resistant zippered left chest pocket, a magnetic right chest call pocket and insulated hand pockets.
- Colors: Typha and Darkwater. (Typha is the cattail genus, so the pattern is named for the thing it hides in, which is a design brief nobody can argue with.)
- Sizes: S to XXXL.
Buyer feedback on the maker's page is mixed on fit: one reviewer found it short, one found the medium snug with the pockets sitting high, and one found it very warm with a mid-weight base layer. Seven reviews is a small sample, so I'd treat it as a prompt to check the size chart, not as a verdict.
Why the table has 14 other jackets
First Lite has one product in the table, so the rest are alternatives: wading and wader jackets from other makers, picked by type and by how many specs the makers publish. Orvis, Frogg Toggs, Kylebooker and Bassdash are fishing-first. Banded and Avery sell hunting-first jackets. The Aquaz Trinity completes the set. You can sort and filter, and nothing in the order is a ranking. The Orvis jacket is in the table as a fishing-first example.
How the Migrator compares
The Migrator is the only insulated jacket in the table with a stated insulation weight and a stated temperature range. The Banded insulated jackets (Calefaction, Aspire Catalyst, Stretchapeake) and the Avery jackets are built for the same cold-water hunting use, but the data does not give an insulation weight or a temperature range for them. That is a gap in the data, not a verdict. The fishing-first jackets (the Frogg Toggs FTX Elite and Lite, the Orvis Clearwater, Bassdash, Kylebooker) list layers and ratings but no insulation, so plan on adding warmth underneath. Our wading jackets page explains how to read layers and waterproof ratings, and the what to wear under waders guide covers the layers beneath.
How to read the table
The jacket columns are Model, Fit, Fabric layers, Waterproof rating, Hood and Warranty. Under each value is a small mark. "Maker" means the manufacturer's own page states it, "claimed" means it is the maker's claim with no independent standard named, "listing" means it comes from the Amazon listing, and a dash means we could not confirm it anywhere. For the Migrator, the layer count is the maker's description of its 4.5-layer body fabric. The hood shows a dash in our table, although the maker's page describes an adjustable four-point hood, because that value is not in our data. The waterproof rating is also a dash, because the maker describes the body fabric as 4.5-layer waterproof but publishes no millimeter figure that we could find. That does not mean it leaks. It means you cannot compare it to a jacket that publishes a number, such as the 20,000 mm Frogg Toggs FTX Elite.
Pockets, cuffs and insulation notes sit under "More specs" on each row, where we have them.
Choosing between a hunting jacket and a fishing jacket
The two jobs pull in different directions. A hunting wader jacket is built to keep you warm while you stand or sit in cold water, so it adds insulation, fleece-lined pockets and often a longer, heavier cut. A fishing jacket is built to keep you dry while you walk and cast, so it favors a light shell, a high breathability rating and sleeves that let you move. If you do both, a shell with a warm layer underneath is the more flexible choice, and an insulated hunting jacket is the more specialized one.
Whichever you choose, check that the hem clears the water at the depth you wade and that the chest pockets sit high enough to reach. And remember that the wading belt is the safety item here, not the jacket. Our wading belts page explains why I'd wear one.
Warranty
First Lite's apparel warranty says it replaces items compromised by a manufacturer's defect for the Practical Product Lifespan. A customer service representative decides when that ends, taking into account the type of product, how it was used and its age. It excludes pilling, abrasion, pinholes and other cosmetic wear, rips, punctures and burns from normal field use, and damage from laundering outside the instructions. You need the original order number, the warranty is non-transferable, and approved claims are usually replaced with the same item, or an updated version, a comparable product or store credit. California residents receive store credit only, which the page attributes to PFAS regulations.
The Forge has separate terms. Replacement covers boot delamination, fabric delamination over one inch across, center-front zipper failure, inseam failure over 10 inches and boot joint failure. Smaller seam failures and small delamination are repaired through a service partner. Rips, punctures, abrasions, burns, stains, mold and care-related degradation are not covered. The page says to hang waders upside down by the boots to dry, and that improper drying can void the warranty. That is a useful detail, because it links your care habits to your coverage. Our how to clean waders guide covers the general method.
Sizing
The Forge uses a three-part code that combines wader size, height and boot size, such as MDR-9, and the maker advises going up if you fall between measurements. The jacket uses ordinary alpha sizes from S to XXXL. I have not copied the charts. Use the ones on the maker's pages, and measure over the layers you will wear. Our wader size chart guide explains how to measure for waders, and the general rule that applies here is the same: measure, check the chart, then think about layers.
Who should skip First Lite
If you fish rather than hunt, the Migrator is the wrong tool: it is an insulated 46 oz hunting jacket with a 20 to 45 degree range. Look at the fishing-first rows in the table. If you need waders today from Amazon, First Lite is not the answer, since the Forge is not in our data. And if you want a jacket with no PFAS, check each listing, because the maker states the Migrator is made with PFAS chemicals.
Where First Lite shows up
Questions about First Lite
Does First Lite make waders?
Yes. The maker sells the Forge waders, which it describes as a one-piece design with minimal seams, a 4.5-layer nylon body fabric, a submersible YKK Aquaseal center-front zipper, internally bonded neoprene knee pads and a 14-inch LaCrosse Alpha boot with Vibram outsole. The Forge is a waterfowl wader. It is not in the Amazon data we track, so the table shows the Migrator wader jacket instead.
How much do First Lite Forge waders weigh, and are they insulated?
The maker's page lists 9.5 lb. The seat has mapped OrthoLite O-Therm Aerogel insulation, and the boot has 1,000 g of PrimaLoft Gold insulation. The page does not describe the body fabric itself as insulated, and one buyer review on the page says the waders are not insulated, so I'd treat the waders as an uninsulated shell with insulated boots and seat.
What is the First Lite warranty?
For apparel, First Lite says it replaces items with a manufacturer's defect for their Practical Product Lifespan, which a customer service representative decides based on the type of product, how it was used and its age. It excludes pilling, abrasion, pinholes, and rips, punctures and burns from normal field use, plus laundering damage. You need the original order number. The Forge has its own terms covering boot delamination, center-front zipper failure and inseam failure over 10 inches. Read the current policy for your item before you buy.
How should I size the First Lite Forge waders?
The maker uses a three-part code, such as MDR-9, that combines wader size, height and boot size, and it advises going up if you fall between measurements. It provides separate US and international charts. I haven't copied them. Use the chart on the maker's product page, measure over the layers you will wear, and pick the boot size first.
How should I care for First Lite waders?
For the Forge, First Lite's care page says to hand wash in a tub with a mild cleaner, never machine wash, machine dry or dry clean, and to hang the waders upside down by the boots to dry. It says improper drying can void the warranty. Each pair includes repair patches, and the page advises against permanent or solvent-based adhesives because they can prevent a professional repair.
Who owns First Lite and where is it based?
First Lite was founded by Kenton Carruth and Scott Robinson, and the maker's own page describes it as based in Idaho's Wood River Valley. MeatEater, Inc. acquired it, which was announced in June 2019 by one press release and dated 2018 by a local travel article, so I am not sure of the year. I did not find a more recent statement about ownership.
What temperatures is the Migrator wader jacket made for?
The maker lists 20 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, with 133 g of PrimaLoft Gold insulation, a 4.5-layer waterproof body fabric and a weight of 46 oz. Those are the maker's numbers. How warm it feels depends on what you wear under it.
