Which Greys model, if any
Who Greys is
Greys is a fly-fishing brand that says it is a brand of Pure Fishing, Inc. That line is in the footer of its US site. The same site says Greys was "founded over 50 years ago" and talks about its European heritage, and its region selector includes a UK option. It does not name a country, a town or a founder, and the search results I found about the early history came from retailers and conflict on dates, so I leave a founding year out. When a brand tells you only "over 50 years," I take it at that.
What matters for shopping is simpler. Greys sells a full ladder of fly rods, reels and outfits, with maker pages that name the blank, the parts and the case for most models. That makes this a brand where the "maker" mark under a value appears often, and the "—" mostly means the maker left a spec field blank.
What Greys sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track 56 Greys products on Amazon US: 22 fly rods, 24 reels and 10 combos. We found no Greys lines or waders in our data. Line weight, length and piece counts are often marked "listing" because they come from the Amazon page, and action, blank, handle and reel seat are marked "maker" where Greys' product page states them.
The rods fall into five families, the reels into five, and the combos into three.
- Single-hand rods: Lance, Kite, Wing Streamflex, Wing Travel, Wing Salt, Comp-Flex.
- Two-handed rods: Kite Double Handed, Kite Switch, Wing Trout Spey.
- Reels: Tail, Tital, Fin, Cruise, Pace, with cassette versions of some.
- Combos: Fin, Cruise, Fin Euro Nymph.
(Greys has a rod series called Wing, a reel called Tail and another called Fin, so a matched set sounds like assembling a very strange animal. The names are only names.)
The rod series, and who each suits
Lance. Greys calls the Lance the "perfect introduction" to its performance fly rod range. The page lists an intermediate modulus four-piece carbon blank, a user-friendly high-performance action and a sectioned tube. The model table lists every size as medium-fast. We track a 7 foot 6 inch 3-weight, an 8 foot 6 inch 5-weight, a 9-foot 5-weight and a 9 foot 6 inch 8-weight. Treat it as the entry rod.
Kite single-handed. Greys says the Kite is "a step forward from our accomplished Lance series." It has a four-piece blank of Toreon, described as high intermediate modulus carbon, AAA cork, single-foot snake guides and lined stripper guides, a captivated slide band and a rod bag and hard tube. Our table lists a 6 foot 6 inch 4-weight, 8-foot-6 and 9-foot 5-weights, and 8-foot and 9-foot 6-weights. All are medium-fast per the model table, even though the spec field is blank.
Kite Double Handed and Kite Switch. Two-handed rods for spey casting, in four pieces with a full alloy reel seat: a 13-foot 8/9-weight, a 15-foot 10/11-weight, and two switch rods at 11 feet 1 inch in 7/8 and 8/9 weights. A switch rod is a short two-hander that can be cast with both hands or one, and a spey rod is a long two-hander for casting from the bank with little room behind you. See our spey rods page for the wider market.
Wing Streamflex. Greys says Streamflex is known for light line and European river techniques, and that the Wing version brings improved actions, a lower-profile blank and balance aimed at good in-hand feel. It is a Powerlux four-piece carbon blank with an AAA cork handle and a rod bag and hard tube, in lengths from 6 feet 6 inches to 11 feet 6 inches and weights from 2 to 6. We track models from 7 foot 6 inches to 10 feet in 3, 4 and 5 weights. A 10-foot 5-weight like our verdict model is a long rod that keeps line off the water, which helps in a nymph rig and tires you on a long day.
Wing Travel. A six-piece Powerlux rod "perfect for travel," meant to pack into a backpack or carry-on. We track 9-foot 5-weight and 8-weight models and an 11 foot 4 inch 5-weight. It comes in a rod bag and a hard tube. Six sections are more joints to keep clean and seated. That is the price of a short carry case, and I'd pay it only if you travel.
Wing Salt. A saltwater rod with a four-piece Powerlux blank, a full alloy reel seat, lined stripper guides, double-foot snake guides and a hard tube. We track 9-foot 7- and 9-weights. The page names no corrosion rating, and I would not read a corrosion claim into it.
Wing Trout Spey and Comp-Flex. The Wing Trout Spey is an 11 foot 4 inch two-hander in 5-weight, aimed at trout. The Comp-Flex is listed as a moderate-action 3-weight, in 9 foot 6 inch and 10 foot 6 inch lengths, lengths that people often use for nymphing. We found no maker page for the Comp-Flex, so its values are from the listing.
Read fly rod action if medium-fast and moderate are still blurry, and see euro nymph rods for that style.
The reels
Greys makes more reel models than most brands at its level, and the maker pages are specific.
Tail. A die-cast aluminum body machined in two passes, a large arbor and a sealed carbon disc drag. Greys lists maximum drag at 8 lb on the 3/4 and 5/6 sizes and 7 lb on the 7/8. The enclosed frame is meant to stop line escaping behind the spool, and a pouch is included. The Tail AW (7/8 and 9/10 in our table) is listed for all-water use with a higher maximum drag.
Tital. The flagship, machined from bar stock aluminum with a sealed carbon disc drag, offered in freshwater or saltwater versions. Greys' drag ratings go from 6 lb on the 3/4 and 5/6 models to 9 lb on the 9/10. Weights run from 6.28 ounces (3/4) to 8.64 ounces (9/10).
Fin. A cast and machined aluminum reel with a disc drag and a large arbor. The maximum drag in our data is about 2 lb, which is gentle by design for trout. It is the reel in the Fin combos. Cassette versions of the Fin are also listed.
Cruise. A die-cast large-arbor aluminum reel with a Rulon disc drag, listed at 8 lb maximum drag in 5/6 and 7/8 sizes, and the reel in the Cruise combos.
Pace. A cast aluminum large-arbor reel with drag between 1.5 and 4 lb, in 3/4, 7/8 and 9/10 sizes plus cassette models. I read little in the data about Pace beyond the specs.
Choose the reel by three questions. Does its line range include your rod's line weight? Do you need a sealed drag (the Tail and Tital have one)? Do you fish salt (the Tital and Tail AW)? Our fly reel size guide explains the numbers, and saltwater fly reels compares across brands.
Combos
Ten Greys combos turn up, in three families. The Fin combo is the most fully described: a four-piece rod, the Fin disc-drag reel, a twin-colour floating line with a loop, backing fitted to the reel, a tapered leader and a combination rod and reel case, in line weights 4 to 8 and lengths of 8, 9 and 10 feet. Greys calls it a ready-to-fish "just add water" package. The Cruise combo comes in 9-foot 5/6 and 7/8 and a 10-foot 7/8, with a medium-fast rod, a die-cast reel with a Rulon drag, a matching floating line and a hard tube; the page does not list backing or a leader, so check the listing before you buy. The Fin Euro Nymph combo is a 10-foot or 11-foot 3-weight with a size 3/4 Fin reel, a down-locking reel seat and a low-diameter level euro nymph line.
A combo saves you from matching a rod, reel and line. Look at what the box contains before you click. See fly rod combos for the category.
Warranty
Greys' rod warranty works through registration. You register the rod within 60 days of purchase, and then you are entitled, for the lifetime of the product, to repair or replacement of damaged, broken or defective sections, at Greys' discretion. The page notes that the service does not reduce your statutory rights in the first 12 months. Each claim carries a fee, which Greys can change without notice and which covers repair or replacement, handling and return postage. Coverage is for the original owner. Lost or stolen rods or sections, normal wear and tear, neglect, alteration, abuse and consequential loss are excluded. For a claim, you send the whole rod or the remaining pieces to Greys customer service with the form, and you pay the shipping. If the rod was not registered, include the original proof of purchase.
For products other than rods, the page describes a statutory 12-month warranty against manufacturing and materials defects, for products used as intended, and says to return the item to the place of purchase with your receipt. The page does not name reels. The Fin combo page says reels carry a one-year warranty. If you buy on Amazon, the seller matters for the receipt route, so keep the order record.
The warranty text reads as written for the UK market (statutory rights, the phrase "mis-described goods"), and I would check with Greys customer service whether a US purchase changes anything. International customers are told to contact customer service before shipping.
How I would shop Greys
First, pick the job: a single-hand rod for trout (Lance, Kite, Streamflex), a travel rod (Wing Travel), a saltwater rod (Wing Salt) or a two-hander. Second, choose the reel by sealed drag and weight. Third, decide whether a combo covers it. If you only need a rod and a reel, the match between the line weights is what matters, and the model table on each maker page is the quickest check.
Fourth, read the marks. A "maker" value is on Greys' product page. A "listing" value is on Amazon only. A "—" value is a blank we will not guess. For Greys, the commonest dash is the action field, which the maker leaves empty in its spec list even though the model table says medium-fast. I use the model table in the text above and say so.
Compare against other brands at the same line weight before you commit. Our fly rods page and the fly rod brands catalog are the places to start.
Where Greys shows up
Questions about Greys
Are Greys fly rods good for beginners?
The Lance is the one Greys describes as the introduction to its performance fly rod range, for novice and experienced anglers alike. It is a four-piece rod with an intermediate modulus carbon blank and a medium-fast action on the model table, supplied in a sectioned tube. Whether it suits you depends on how you fish, and we do not test rods, but on paper the Lance is where Greys points a first-time buyer.
What is the difference between the Greys Lance and the Kite?
Greys describes the Kite as a step forward from the Lance, with added performance and convenience upgrades and a wider range of models. The Kite has a blank of Toreon, which Greys calls a high intermediate modulus carbon, a captivated reel seat slide band, and ships in a rod bag and hard tube. The Lance comes in a sectioned tube. Both list a medium-fast action on the model tables.
What is the Greys Wing series?
Wing is a family of rods built on Powerlux carbon blanks. The Wing Streamflex is a light-line river rod aimed at European-style techniques, the Wing Travel is a six-piece rod meant to fit a backpack or carry-on, the Wing Salt is a saltwater rod with a full alloy reel seat, and the Wing Trout Spey is a two-handed trout rod. Each is described on its own page by Greys.
Do Greys rods have a lifetime warranty?
Greys says you must register a rod within 60 days of purchase to join its Rod Warranty and Repair Service. Once registered, you are entitled for the lifetime of the product to repair or replacement, at Greys' discretion, of damaged, broken or defective sections, and a fee applies to each claim. Coverage is for the original owner. Lost or stolen rods, normal wear, neglect, alteration and abuse are excluded.
What warranty do Greys reels have?
Our data shows a 12-month warranty on Greys reels, and Greys' Fin combo page states a one-year reel warranty. Greys' warranty page treats products other than rods as having a statutory 12-month warranty against manufacturing and materials defects, for products used as intended, and says to return the item to the place of purchase with your receipt. The page does not name reels, so read the policy for your reel.
Are Greys reels sealed?
Several are. Greys describes the Tail as having a smooth and dependable sealed carbon disc drag, and the Tital as having a sealed carbon disc drag in fresh or saltwater versions. The Fin and Pace reels are listed with disc drags but are not described as sealed in our data. A sealed drag keeps water and grit out of the drag stack, which matters most if the reel gets dunked or splashed with salt.
Is Greys a British brand?
Greys' US site says it was founded over 50 years ago and speaks of its European heritage, and its region selector lists a UK site. It does not name a country or town, and I did not find a firsthand source for a founding date or place, so I leave those out. The site's footer says Greys is a brand of Pure Fishing, Inc.
What comes in a Greys combo?
It depends on the combo. Greys says the Fin combo has a four-piece rod, the Fin reel, a twin-colour floating line, backing, a tapered leader and a combination rod and reel case. The Cruise combo has a medium-fast four-piece rod, a die-cast Cruise reel with a Rulon disc drag, a matching floating line and a hard rod and reel tube, and its page does not list backing or a leader.
