What's in this tableFly rods rated for a 5-weight line by their maker, including dual-rated 4/5 and 5/6 rods.
Who a 5 weight fly rod suits
If you fish trout and want one rod, this is the one. Field & Stream names the 5-weight as its top pick for trout, and says a 9-foot 5-weight is often called the classic all-around trout rod. It handles weighted nymphs, dry flies and streamers, it deals with trout up to about 20 inches, and it is still enjoyable on fish of 8 to 12 inches.
The reason the 5-weight gets recommended so often is that it hedges. It is heavy enough for a moderate wind and a bushy dry fly, and light enough that a small fish feels like a fish. That is more a compromise than a compliment, and it is the right compromise when you don't know where you will be fishing next month. If you already know your water is tiny, look at the 3-weight fly rod page. If you are heading for big flies or salt, the 8-weight fly rod page is the other end of the range.
How to read the table
Every value carries a small mark. Maker means the manufacturer's own page states it. Claimed is a maker's claim with no independent standard named. Listing means it comes from the Amazon listing and the maker has not confirmed it. A dash means we could not confirm it, and we don't guess.
The columns on this page:
- Line weight shows a 1 to 12 gauge. Every rod here sits at 5, and some also show 4 or 6 because they are dual-rated. A 4/5 leans light; a 5/6 leans toward a bit more line and power.
- Length · pieces gives length in feet and inches, plus the number of sections.
- Action is where the rod bends, in the maker's or listing's words.
- Blank material is graphite, fiberglass or composite.
- Water appears only when a maker or listing states it. In this group a few rods are described as all-water, and a handful as freshwater. A dash does not mean unsuitable, only unconfirmed.
- Warranty gives the maker's wording.
Under each model name, "More specs" shows the rest. Filter by line-weight band, up to three spec selects, or brand, and sort on any column. A tip: filter by brand or a spec select, then sort the Length column to see the rods nearest your preferred length.
Line weight, in plain numbers
Fly lines are numbered from 1 to 15, and the standard sets a target weight for the first 30 feet of line, minus the level tip. As summarised on Wikipedia, a 5-weight targets 140 grains, within a range of about 134 to 146. A 3-weight targets 100 and an 8-weight 210, so a 5-weight sits roughly in the middle of the range most anglers use. That is the number the rod's label refers to. If a rod is a "5", it expects a 5-weight line.
If you are between sizes, say a dual-rated 4/5 or 5/6, the maker is telling you the rod will work with either line. Which is better depends on your stroke and your flies. Our fly rod weight chart matches weights to fish.
Length: eight, nine or longer
Under 8 feet. The data holds a few 5-weights this short. They suit brushy water, but they give up reach.
8 to 8 and a half feet. A little more manageable under trees, with enough length to hold line off the water. A number of the 5-weights here sit at eight and a half feet.
9 feet. The classic. Most 5-weights in the data are nine feet. It is the length to choose if you don't know your water.
Longer than 9 feet. Uncommon for the 5-weight in this data, and typically for reach or nymphing. The Euro nymph rod page covers the specialist rods.
The fly rod length guide goes into the trade-offs. As a rule of thumb, I'd pick 9 feet unless the water or the technique tells me otherwise.
Action
Orvis describes a fast action as one with the flex near the tip and a stiff butt, which gives power for big fish and wind but is hard for beginners because it does not absorb mistakes. A medium action bends from the tip about a quarter of the way down, and Orvis calls it the best combination of performance and versatility. A slow action bends deeper and suits short, delicate casts on small streams.
In the 5-weight data, medium-fast is the most common description, with a smaller group of fast rods, a few moderate rods and a few that list a plain medium or no action at all. Because labels aren't standardised, one maker's "moderate" can feel faster than another's "fast". Use the label to shortlist, not to decide. The fast-action fly rods page lists rods that makers call fast, and the fly rod action guide explains the terms.
Material and pieces
Most 5-weights in the table are graphite. A smaller group is fiberglass or a graphite-glass composite. Fiberglass tends to be softer and slower, which some anglers like for dry flies and short casts; graphite tends to be lighter and stiffer. See the fiberglass vs graphite guide, and the graphite and fiberglass pages.
Four-piece is the standard here. There are two-piece rods that assemble fast, three-piece and five-piece rods, and at least one with eight pieces made to pack small. If the rod will travel, more pieces help. If it stays in the truck, fewer pieces mean fewer joints to wipe.
How to choose
By fish. Trout, smallmouth and panfish are all comfortable on a 5-weight. Our guides on what weight fly rod for trout, fly fishing for trout and smallmouth go into detail.
By flies. Nymphs, dries and small streamers all work. Once you are throwing big streamers or heavy flies regularly, you will want more rod. Our guide to fly fishing a streamer covers that technique.
By wind. A fast action gives line speed in a breeze. A softer action is gentler on small fish and calm water.
By budget. I will leave prices out. The 5-weight group runs from the lowest price tier to specialist builds. What you are buying at the top is usually the maker's finish and a longer warranty, not a different fish count. Rod, reel and line from one box can be a sensible entry. The starter kits list applies a written rule. The budget fly rods list does the same for the lowest tier.
By warranty. Warranty wording ranges from 12 months or a limited year up to lifetime and, for some makers, a long original-owner term. Read the exact words: some need registration, some charge a fee per claim, and some cover only the original owner. A dash means we found nothing.
Common mistakes
- Buying a 5-weight because everyone says so. Do it if it fits the water, not because of the crowd. Nobody has asked the trout its line weight.
- Mixing line weights. A 5-weight rod wants a 5-weight line. Putting a 7 on it makes a short, awkward cast.
- Ignoring the Water column. If you plan to fish salt, look for a maker or listing that says so, and expect to rinse the rod.
- Judging by the label. "Fast", "premium" and "all-purpose" are words. The table shows what was confirmed.
- Forgetting the rest of the outfit. A reel and a line are half the cast. See fly reels and fly lines, or the fly rod setup guide.
Dual-rated rods: 4/5 and 5/6
A handful of the rods on this page carry two numbers. The maker is saying the blank was designed to work with either line weight, and the table's gauge shows both. In practice, I'd read a 4/5 as a rod for people who want a gentler, smaller-water feel without giving up a 5-weight line when the wind gets up, and a 5/6 as a rod for people who expect larger flies or a breeze. That is editorial reading, not a spec. If you are unsure, start with the lower number for delicate presentations and the higher for power, and see which suits your casting stroke.
One more check: a dual rating on an Amazon listing is only as good as the listing. A "listing" mark under the gauge means the number comes from the Amazon page and the maker has not confirmed it, so compare it with the maker's own page when the model has one.
Packing and care
Rods that pack small are easy to carry, and easy to forget in a car boot. Whatever the rod, the routine is the same: take it apart, wipe it down, let it dry before it goes back into its tube, and keep it out of hot vehicles. If you fished salt or muddy water, rinse the sections with fresh water first. Clean a gritty joint rather than forcing it. Warranty cover, where a maker offers it, usually assumes the rod was used and stored sensibly, so read the wording before you need it.
Brands in the table
Brands with the largest runs of 5-weights in our data are Aventik, Greys and Maxcatch; after them come Douglas, Echo and Lamson. Others include Shakespeare, Hardy, Wild Water, Okuma, Redington, St. Croix, Daiwa, and Kylebooker. The brand catalog has the rest, and the fly rods page covers every line weight.

Questions people ask
What is a 5 weight fly rod good for?
Field & Stream names the 5-weight as its top pick for trout and says it handles weighted nymphs, dry flies and streamers. It says the rod can handle trout up to about 20 inches while staying fun on fish of 8 to 12 inches. The same weight is also used for smallmouth bass and other medium fish in rivers and lakes, though bigger flies and more wind push anglers toward a 6-weight or heavier.
Is a 5 weight fly rod good for beginners?
It is the weight most beginner advice lands on, because one rod covers many situations. Orvis says fast-action rods are hard for beginners, so a medium or medium-fast action is the gentler start. A nine-foot length is the usual choice. Check the Action column and the Warranty column, and read the starter kits list if you want line and reel included.
What length is best for a 5 weight fly rod?
Nine feet is the usual length and the one Field & Stream calls the classic all-around trout rod. Eight and a half feet is a little shorter and easier in brush, and the data also holds shorter and longer 5-weights. Longer rods give reach, and shorter rods give you tighter control. Our fly rod length guide goes through the trade-offs.
What is the difference between a 4 weight, 5 weight and 6 weight fly rod?
A line weight number is a target weight for the first 30 feet of line, not counting the level tip. According to the standard as summarised on Wikipedia, a 5-weight line targets 140 grains. Heavier numbers cast heavier lines and bigger flies and push through wind more easily. A 4-weight is gentler on small trout, and a 6-weight suits bigger flies and more wind. Dual-rated 4/5 and 5/6 rods sit between.
Do 5 weight fly rods come in more than four pieces?
Yes. Four pieces is the most common in the data, and there are two-piece and three-piece rods, a few five-piece rods, and at least one travel rod with eight pieces. Two-piece rods are quicker to assemble, and more pieces pack smaller.
Where are reviews of 5 weight fly rods?
We don't test rods, and Rudy Banks is a pen name for the editors, so this page does not carry rod reviews or test results. What you will find is every spec we could confirm, marked by source, plus a warranty column and a rule for how rods got on this page. Use that to shortlist, then read what buyers say on the Amazon page.
What reel and line should I use with a 5 weight fly rod?
A 5-weight line and a reel built to hold it, with backing and a leader. Reels are usually rated for a range of line weights, so check the range on the reel you pick. A starter kit puts rod, reel and line in one box, and the fly reels and fly lines sections cover the parts.
