Which Hardy model, if any
Who Hardy is
Hardy's history page says that in 1872 "a young man called William Hardy set up shop as a gunsmith in Alnwick, Northumberland," and that his brother John James later joined the partnership. The Hardy family ran the firm until 1967, when the Harris and Sheldon group bought it. Today the site's footer reads that Hardy is a brand of Pure Fishing, Inc. The history page also mentions a Fibatube plant that made the firm's glass fiber and carbon rods, without giving its location, and it does not say where Hardy products are made today. The Marquis LWT product page is more specific: it says that reel is made in Alnwick, England.
I will not fill in what the pages do not say. The Aydon and Ultralite LL rod pages I read do not state a country of manufacture, so this page does not either.
What Hardy sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track 49 Hardy products on Amazon US: 21 fly rods and 28 fly reels. There are no Hardy lines, waders or packs in our data. The rods fall into a handful of lines:
- Aydon, single-handed trout rods, 8 of them in our data.
- Ultralite LL, five long, light-line rods.
- Ultralite NSX, a short 4-weight and a two-handed rod.
- Older and heavy-line rods, including the Shadow, the Zephrus AWS and a 15 foot Zephrus DH, a Demon saltwater rod and a Marksman Z.
The reels are mostly Marquis LWT and Cascapedia, plus the Lightweight family, a pair of 1939 Bougle Heritage reels, the Perfect reels, the Ultralite MTX reels, the Fortuna Regent and an Averon Cassette.
In the table above, a small mark sits under each value. "Maker" means a Hardy page states it, "listing" means only the Amazon listing does, and "—" means we could not confirm it. Several older Hardy listings are marked "listing" or "—" because no maker page is linked, so the marks matter here.
The Aydon rods
The maker lists the Aydon as a Sintrix multi-modulus carbon fibre blank, with hard chrome single-foot guides and ceramic-lined stripping guides, a custom lightweight reel seat with a keyed slide band and wood or aluminium spacers, and a travel tube. The action is medium fast per the model comparison table. The maker lists lengths from 7 to 10 feet in 17 models, from 3 to 8 weight, and positions the rod for everything from small-stream trout to stillwater fishing. Our data lists the Aydon in a 7 foot 5-weight, an 8 foot 6 inch 4-weight, 9 foot 7 and 8-weights, a 9 foot 6 inch 6-weight, and 10 foot rods in 4, 6 and 7-weights.
The page does not state the number of pieces in the specs. Our rod table shows pieces only if a source states them, so look for a dash. Medium fast means the rod bends further down the blank than a fast rod, which most anglers find easier to feel at short range. Our fly rod action guide explains the terms.
The Ultralite LL and NSX rods
The Ultralite LL is the technical line. The maker calls it a light-line, technique-specific rod built for advanced European-style and competition-style techniques, with a Sintrix NSX blank that uses a higher share of high and high-intermediate modulus carbon fiber, down-locking reel seats on key sizes and ceramic-lined titanium recoil guides. It comes in five lengths from 9 feet 2 inches to 11 feet 2 inches, at 0/2, 2, 3 and 4 weights, all medium fast. We track the 9 foot 9 inch 3-weight, the 10 foot 2 inch 2-weight, the 10 foot 8 inch 0/2 and 3-weights and the 11 foot 2 inch 2-weight.
Why such long rods? In tight-line nymphing, a long rod keeps the line off the water. Our euro nymphing setup guide explains why, and the euro nymph rod page lists rods from other brands.
The Ultralite NSX family in our data includes two short 4-weights (6 foot 6 inch and 7 foot 6 inch) and a 13 foot 6 inch two-handed rod in 6/7 weight with six pieces, a hard tube and a custom aluminum and carbon reel seat. For the two-handed side, our spey rod page and the guide to what a spey rod is explain the words.
Heavy-line and older rods
The Zephrus DH is a 15 foot, four-piece rod for 10/11-weight lines, and the Demon is an 11 foot 9 inch saltwater rod for 7/8 weight with a bar stock aluminum reel seat. The Marksman Z in our data is a 9 foot, 11-weight fast rod, per the maker. The Zephrus AWS is listed as fast action and the Shadow as a 9 foot rod, both from the Amazon listing alone. For saltwater options from other brands, see our saltwater fly rods page.
The reels
Marquis LWT. The maker calls it a remodeled classic that was a main stay of the Hardy line for many years, in bar stock 6061 aluminum with modified porting to reduce weight, made in Alnwick, England. Sizes run from 2/3 and 4 to 7 plus Salmon No. 1, 2 and 3, with weights from 3.4 oz (size 4) to 9.9 oz (Salmon No. 3) and backing capacities written as a line and a length, for example WF5 plus 40 yards of 20 pound Dacron. The listed drag is 0.5 pounds for sizes 2/3 to 7, and 0.7 pounds for the salmon sizes. The maker's page leaves the drag type blank, so I will not call it a click or a disc.
Cascapedia. A machined freshwater reel. In our data the 4/5 and 6/7 sizes are click-and-pawl at 6.3 and 8.4 oz, and the 8/9 and 10/11 sizes are listed with a disc drag and a 4 pound maximum, at 12.7 and 14 oz. The 8/9 and 10/11 sizes are the ones to look at if you want a classic look with a drag you can set.
Lightweight, 1939 Bougle Heritage and Perfect. The Lightweight family (Flyweight 2/3, Featherweight 3/4, LRH 4/5) is click-and-pawl aluminum, weighing 2.9, 3.6 and 4.0 oz. The 1939 Bougle Heritage comes in 3 and 3.5 inch sizes, click-and-pawl, with a convertible retrieve. The 1912 Perfect and 1921 Wide Spool Perfect are click-and-pawl per the maker. (Hardy reels have model years in their names, so you can tell what vintage you are not buying.) Our click-and-pawl reels page lists other brands.
Ultralite MTX and MTX-S, Fortuna Regent and Averon Cassette. The Fortuna Regent (6000, 10000 and 12000) is listed with a carbon disc drag per the maker. The Averon Cassette 7000 is listed with a disc drag on the maker's page. The Ultralite MTX and MTX-S in our data have only the Amazon listing as a source.
If you want to match a reel to a rod, our fly reel size guide explains how line weight and capacity work.
About the Hardy spey reel
We have no reel in our data that Hardy labels as a spey reel. The salmon-sized Marquis LWT reels and the larger Cascapedia are the ones with the most capacity: for example the Salmon No. 3 is listed at WF12 plus 400 yards. Whether that suits a two-handed rod depends on the line, so check the capacity against your line before buying.
Reading a Hardy rod listing
Hardy's rod listings carry a length, a line weight and sometimes two weights, such as 6/7 or 0/2. A rod marked 6/7 is built to work with either a 6 or 7 weight line. Our table stores length in inches, so a 9 foot rod shows as 108. The two things to check are the number of pieces, which several listings leave blank, and the case. The Aydon comes in a travel tube per the maker, and the Ultralite NSX rods list a hard tube. If you travel with your rods, those are the ones to look for.
The warranty detail matters too. Hardy's rod cover is for registered rods, and a per-claim fee applies. That is not a free replacement scheme, and it is worth knowing before a rod gets slammed in a car door.
Common mistakes
- Buying the wrong weight. A 3-weight Ultralite LL is a very light rod. If you fish mostly nymphs on a bigger river, a 3 may be as light as you want. If you expect to cast big flies, it is too light.
- Assuming "Heritage" or "Perfect" means a disc drag. The classic-style reels in our data are click-and-pawl.
- Skipping registration. The warranty on both rods and reels depends on it.
Warranty
Hardy's warranty page covers rods and reels differently. For rods, once you have registered within 60 days of purchase, you are entitled for the life of the product to repair or replacement, at Hardy's choice, of damaged, broken or defective sections. Lost or stolen rods or sections and consequential liability are excluded. Reels are warranted against defects in design, material and workmanship for 5 years from the original purchase date, unless the leaflet with your reel says otherwise, also with registration within 60 days. Hardy decides whether a reel can be repaired or replaced, and may offer a current reel instead. Damage from misuse, lack of maintenance, negligence or normal wear is not covered. Both are for the original owner only, and a claim needs proof of purchase.
The registration step is the one people skip. Register within 60 days, and keep the receipt where you will find it.
How to choose
- Small trout stream. A short Aydon, 7 to 8 foot 6 inches.
- General trout river. A 9 or 10 foot Aydon in 4 to 6 weight.
- Tight-line nymphing. An Ultralite LL, at the line weight and length you want.
- A classic-looking reel. The Marquis LWT for a click drag, or the Cascapedia 8/9 and 10/11 for a disc drag.
- A modern disc-drag reel. The Fortuna Regent or Averon Cassette, after checking the line capacity.
For other brands, the fly rods and fly reels sections set Hardy beside everyone else we track.
Where Hardy shows up
Questions about Hardy
Who owns Hardy fly rods?
Hardy's own footer reads that Hardy is a brand of Pure Fishing, Inc. Its history page says the Hardy family ran the firm until 1967, when the Harris and Sheldon group bought it. The page does not give the later ownership chain, so we do not either.
Where are Hardy rods and reels made?
It depends on the product. The maker's Marquis LWT page says the reel is made in Alnwick, England. The Aydon and Ultralite LL rod pages we read do not say where the rods are made, so we do not state it.
What is the Hardy Aydon rod?
A single-handed graphite rod line. The maker lists a Sintrix multi-modulus carbon blank, medium fast action, a custom lightweight reel seat and a travel tube, in 17 models from 7 to 10 feet and 3 to 8 weight. The maker positions it for everything from small-stream trout to stillwater fishing.
What is the Hardy Ultralite LL for?
The maker describes it as a light-line rod for advanced European-style and competition-style techniques. It lists five lengths from 9 feet 2 inches to 11 feet 2 inches, medium fast action and a Sintrix NSX blank. See our euro nymphing setup guide for the technique.
How does the Hardy warranty work?
Per Hardy's warranty page, a registered rod gets lifetime repair or replacement of damaged, broken or defective sections, at Hardy's choice, and a reel is warranted for 5 years from the original purchase. Both are for the original owner, and you register within 60 days of purchase on Hardy's website. The page excludes misuse, lack of maintenance, negligence and normal wear, and says a claim needs proof of purchase.
What is the Hardy Marquis LWT?
A machined aluminum fly reel the maker describes as a remodeled classic, made in Alnwick, England from bar stock 6061 aluminum. It comes in sizes 4 to 7 plus 2/3 and three salmon sizes. The maker lists drag figures of 0.5 and 0.7 pounds, depending on size.
