Which Maxcatch model, if any
Who Maxcatch is
Maxcatch's own pages describe a company that began in 2005 and sets out to make fly fishing open to people regardless of budget. The About page says the founder is an angler who developed his skills in South Korea, though it does not name him. It also says the parent company is registered in the United States, the global headquarters is in Hong Kong, and finished goods are stored in warehouses in China and the United States.
Everything in that paragraph comes from Maxcatch's About page, and I can't confirm it from an independent source. The brand sells under the name Maxcatch, though Amazon's brand field in our data reads "M MAXIMUMCATCH". If you search Amazon for the brand, you will see both spellings.
The About page says Maxcatch designs and manufactures rods and reels, and also sells lines, apparel and accessories. It says manufacturing takes place in a long list of countries, but does not link any model to any factory. I'll leave country of origin out of every description below because I have nothing to support it.
What Maxcatch sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track 69 Maxcatch products on Amazon US. They fall into these groups: graphite and fiberglass fly rods, a two-handed switch rod, fly reels, combos, fly lines, backing, pack and vest items, and one folding wading staff. The table above lists the ones we have data for, with a mark under each value. A value marked maker is stated on Maxcatch's own page. Claimed means a maker claim with no named lab or standard. Listing means the Amazon listing says so and the maker page does not confirm it. A dash means nobody confirmed it, and I don't fill gaps.
You will notice a lot of "listing" marks next to line weight, length and pieces for the rods. That does not mean the rod is mislabeled. It means we took the number from Amazon and could not match it to a line on the maker page. Where the model name carries the figures, such as "Predator 9904 (9' 9wt 4pc)", the data is firm.
The rod lines and who each suits
Maxcatch rod names tell you the target, so it helps to know the lines. The list below uses only what the maker pages and listings in our data say.
Ultralite. A small-stream rod line. The Ultralite 3-weight is 7 feet 6 inches, four pieces, medium-fast graphite with a half-wells handle (a tapered cork grip that is thicker toward the reel) and a CNC-machined reel seat. The Ultralite combos in our data go down to a 2-weight at 6 feet in three pieces and a 3-weight at 7 feet in four pieces, sold with a hard tube. I'd look at this line for small trout water, panfish and creeks with overhead trees. For bigger rivers, step up in length. See our 3-weight fly rods page for the field.
Premier. A general trout line. The Premier 5-weight at 9 feet is a four-piece graphite rod, and the Premier combos pair a rod with an AVID reel and line, per the Amazon listing. The 3-weight Premier combo is 8 feet 4 inches and medium-fast. The 5-weight is the one I'd consider for most people starting out. See 5-weight fly rods and trout fly rods.
Extreme. Fast-action graphite rods, mostly sold as combos. The 3-weight Extreme is 8 feet 4 inches. The 5-weight is 9 feet and the listing shows a large-arbor reel, line, backing, leader and flies. Fast action means the rod bends mostly near the tip, which helps in wind and with heavier flies, and gives you less margin in slow, gentle casting. Our fast action fly rods page lists others.
Fiberglass. Maxcatch lists fiberglass rods in 3-weight at 7 feet (three pieces) and in 6-weight at 8 feet 6 inches (four pieces), both with medium-fast action, cork handles, a machined aluminum seat with a box elder burl insert and a hard tube. A 5-weight at 8 feet 6 inches is labeled "Carbon Glass" and listed as fast action and composite, from the Amazon listing alone. Fiberglass usually bends deeper and feels forgiving, which is the reason people choose it for short casts. See fiberglass fly rods and the fiberglass vs graphite guide.
Alltime Traveller. A five-weight at 9 feet in eight pieces. The listing shows a hard tube. More pieces means a shorter case, and it also means more joints to seat firmly before you cast.
Performance Nymph. A 3-weight euro-nymph rod in four pieces, medium-fast. Euro nymphing is a close-contact style that uses a long, light rod and a weighted fly with a thin leader, and it needs a different rod from a dry fly outfit. Start with what is euro nymphing and the euro nymph rod page.
V-Switch. A two-handed switch rod at 11 feet in 5-weight, four pieces, medium-fast. A switch rod is a short two-hand rod that can be cast overhead or with a spey cast. Our spey rod vs switch rod guide shows the difference.
Predator and Saltpro. The heavier lines. The Saltpro 8904 is a 9-foot 8-weight, fast, with a high-anodized saltwater reel seat, and the maker lists it at 4.51 oz. The Predator 9904 is a 9-foot 9-weight at 5 oz in the data, with 9-weight and 10-weight combos in the same family. Both lines appear on the maker's saltwater pages. See saltwater fly rods and 8-weight fly rods.
The tenkara kits
Maxcatch lists tenkara kits at 10, 11 and 12 feet, and a Triple Zoom kit. The kits list a rod, line and flies, and no reel, because tenkara is fished with a fixed line tied to the rod tip. The lengths are from the Amazon listings. If you are new to the idea, read what is tenkara, then our tenkara fly rods page.
The reels
Maxcatch reels fall into four lines in our data.
AVID. A machined aluminum reel with a mid arbor, a convertible retrieve and a hybrid cork and Teflon disc drag, per the maker. The maker says the body is CNC machined from 6061 T6 aluminum alloy and hard anodized, and the knob adjusts drag with numbered settings. In our data it comes in 1/3, 3/4, 5/6 and 9/10 ranges. A mid arbor is between a standard and a large arbor, a spool core wide enough to pick up line faster than a small core does.
ECO. A cast, large-arbor aluminum reel with a disc drag and a convertible retrieve. The data gives weights of 4.97 oz for the 3/4 and 5.64 oz for the 5/6, with diameters of 2.95 and 3.35 inches, and a backing capacity of the fly line plus 60 yards of 20 lb. It is a pre-spooled reel, which means it arrives with line on it.
Tino. A large-arbor reel that the maker describes as cast and machined aluminum. We list a 5/6, whose line-weight range comes from the listing.
Sparta. The saltwater reel, a 7/9 with a large arbor, machined aluminum construction and a sealed drag. A sealed drag keeps salt and grit out of the clutch, which matters more in the salt than on a trout stream.
If you are matching a reel to a rod, the line-weight range on the reel should include the rod's weight. Our fly reel size guide explains it, and fly reels lists others.
Combos
Combos are where Maxcatch is easiest to read at a glance. In our data combos are the biggest group, and most list a reel, line, backing and leader. The Elegant 5-weight combo is a pink graphite outfit with a WF5F pink line. The kit rows tell you what is in the box. Read that column before you pay, because "combo" on Amazon can mean anything from a rod and reel to a full outfit with flies. Our combo section lists others, and the starter kits page applies a transparent rule to the whole market.
Lines, backing, packs and the wading staff
The Maxcatch lines in our data include a sinking-tip line, a floating shooting (running) line and a Skagit shooting head. A shooting head is a short, heavy front section that you attach to thin running line for spey casting. The braided backing is 20 lb and 100 yards, listed as braided polyester by Amazon. See fly lines, types of fly line and backing.
The packs and vests include the V-Mesh vest, which lists 17 pockets and a weight of 24.5 oz, and the FCO sling pack, which lists a net slot. The V-Comp is a chest pack. There is also a kids vest in 100% cotton with 12 pockets, sold in small, medium and large. On the water, a pack and a vest do different jobs, as the pack vs vest guide explains. If you want a sling, see how to wear a sling pack.
The folding wading staff is 55 inches, aluminum, with a holster. A staff is a safety tool in a current, so treat it as one: check the lock before every trip and don't lean your weight on a collapsible joint you haven't tested on dry land.
Warranty and returns
This is the part where Maxcatch gets less clear. The About page makes a general promise to make it right if a customer is unhappy, and I found no written policy there. The AVID reel page I read states a return window of three days from the date of shipment for quality problems, and says international returns are not accepted. The Extreme 3-weight combo in our data carries the note "1 year, lifetime repair". I could not find a page that ties those two statements into one policy.
My advice is plain: before you buy, read the warranty line on the exact product page, take a screenshot, and keep the order confirmation. Warranty papers tend to end up in the Hook Drawer (the kitchen drawer of unlabeled line spools and manuals for gear that no longer exists), so put the screenshot somewhere you will find it.
How to choose between the Maxcatch lines
Start with the water. For small streams, the Ultralite or fiberglass 3-weight; for most trout rivers, a 5-weight at 9 feet; for streamers, bass and wind, a fast 6-weight or heavier; for salt, the Saltpro and a sealed-drag reel. Then decide whether you want a rod alone or an outfit. If you already have a reel, buy the rod. If not, a combo saves you matching line weights yourself, which is where first-time buyers go wrong.
Then read the marks in the table. Rod action and blank material are the most reliable maker values for these rods. For line weight and length on the older models you may see "listing", and I'd compare it to the model name before you rely on it.
Finally, read the table the way a skeptic would. Every rod on the page is a four-piece unless the table says otherwise, which is a sensible default for a budget brand, since shorter sections fit in a pack. If a number is a dash, it is because I could not confirm it. That is better than a guess.
What Maxcatch leaves out
Some things are missing from our data on purpose. We have no rod weight in ounces for most models, only for the Saltpro and the Predator. We have no independent test of any rod or reel here. And I have no buyer-review summary for this page, because I did not read the Amazon reviews for these products. If buyer feedback matters to you, open the listing and read the three-star reviews first, since they tend to be the most specific.
Where Maxcatch shows up
Questions about Maxcatch
Is Maxcatch a good fly rod brand?
I can't answer that with a verdict, because I haven't handled the rods and nobody here has tested them. What I can tell you is what the data shows: Maxcatch lists graphite and fiberglass rods across a wide range of line weights, sells combos with reel, line, backing and leader, and publishes a product page for most of them. The maker's own pages are the source for rod action, blank material and reel seat in the table. Whether a rod suits you depends on the water and the weight you pick, and the sections above tell you how to choose.
What is in a Maxcatch fly rod combo?
It depends on the combo. Several listings in our data show a rod, a reel, line, backing and leader, and some also list flies. The Premier combos list a rod, an AVID reel and line, and the Amazon listing is the source for those details. The tenkara kits list a rod, line and flies, with no reel because tenkara does not use one. Read the "In the box" column, and open the listing to confirm what is included before you buy.
What do the AVID, ECO, Tino and Sparta reels have in common?
They are all Maxcatch reel lines with aluminum bodies. The maker describes the AVID as a CNC-machined aluminum reel with a hybrid cork and Teflon disc drag and a mid-arbor spool. The ECO is a cast, large-arbor reel in our data and is listed as pre-spooled. The Tino is listed with a large arbor and a disc drag. The Sparta is the one listed as saltwater, with a sealed drag. Each comes in several line-weight ranges, so match the range to your rod.
Does Maxcatch make a saltwater fly rod?
The maker lists the Saltpro 8904 (9 feet, 8-weight, four pieces) as a saltwater rod with a high-anodized reel seat, and the Predator rods in 9-weight and 10-weight carry a saltwater name. Our data tags the Predator rods as all-water, so I'd read the maker page before taking one to the salt. The Sparta reel is the only reel in our data listed as saltwater with a sealed drag.
What is the Maxcatch warranty?
I could not find one clear warranty policy for the whole range. The maker's About page states a general principle of making it right if a customer is unhappy, but no policy. One reel page I read states a return window of three days from the date of shipment for quality problems, and says international returns are not accepted. The Extreme 3-weight combo in our data carries a maker note of one year plus lifetime repair. Check the warranty line on the exact product page before you buy, and keep your order record.
Where is Maxcatch based and where are the rods made?
On its About page Maxcatch says its parent company is registered in the United States, its global headquarters is in the Central district of Hong Kong, and finished goods are stored in warehouses in China and the United States. The same page lists manufacturing in several countries. It does not say which factory makes which rod, so I won't guess a country of origin for any single product.
Which Maxcatch rod is best for a beginner?
I'd avoid a single pick, but I can tell you what I'd look for. A 5-weight at 9 feet in medium-fast action is the usual starting point for trout, and the Premier 5-weight and the Extreme combo fit that description in our data. If you want a complete outfit in one box, look for a combo that lists line, backing and leader. If you fish small streams, the Ultralite 3-weight is the lighter choice. Our fly fishing gear for beginners guide covers the whole kit.
