Which Royal Wulff model, if any
Who Royal Wulff is
Royal Wulff is a fly line brand, and the Triangle Taper is its signature. The maker's product pages credit the taper to Lee Wulff. Beyond that, the company's own pages say little about its history. Two retailer pages give different founding years: ADH Fishing says Lee Wulff founded the brand in 1980, and Trident Fly Fishing says Royal Wulff was founded in 1982 by Joan and Lee Wulff. I could not find a company statement that settles it, so I give both and trust neither.
The maker's warranty page gives a mailing address for claims in Livingston Manor, New York. The pages I read do not say where the lines are made, so I leave that blank.
What Royal Wulff sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track 27 Royal Wulff listings on Amazon US: 26 fly lines and 1 backing. We found no Royal Wulff rods, reels or kits there, so this is a page about lines.
In the table above, the mark under each value tells you where it came from. "Maker" means Royal Wulff's own page states it, "listing" means only the Amazon listing does, and "—" means we could not confirm it anywhere. For this brand most of the values are marked "maker", because almost every Amazon listing links a Royal Wulff product page. A few older listings, such as the TT5F and the Triangle Taper Plus 4F, have no maker page in our data and show "listing" marks.
How to read a Royal Wulff listing
Names carry the weight, the taper and the density. A name like Triangle Taper Classic Floating 3F means the Triangle Taper Classic profile, floating, in a 3-weight. An "I" at the end is intermediate (a slow sinking line), "S" is sinking, and "Lost Tip" and "Hover" names are sink-tip lines, with a floating body and a sinking front section. The table shows line weight as a bar so you can compare quickly, and a "range" in our data is the span of weights the maker says the head will load on a rod.
Loops matter too. The maker's pages list a welded loop at the front of most lines and at both ends of many Triangle Taper lines, and the warranty covers a failed loop for only 30 days, so check the loop before your first trip and keep the receipt. If any of the naming is new, start with our types of fly line guide and the fly line weight chart.
The Triangle Taper trout lines
These are the lines most people mean when they say Royal Wulff. They share a floating, 90-foot build for coldwater, with welded loops, and differ in head design.
Classic. The maker's page describes a continuous front taper in the head, a long, weighted butt section and light running line, so the line casts like a shooting head with good accuracy. It is rated for coldwater at 75 degrees Fahrenheit and below, in weights 2 to 9, with head lengths of 36 feet for weights 2 to 5 and 40 feet for 6 to 9. The maker suggests it for roll casting in tight quarters. We track it in a 3-weight and an 8-weight, and an older Midstream TT Floating 8F.
Signature. The maker calls it the refinement of the Triangle Taper, an all-purpose line meant to cast and present more easily while keeping the original's shootability and roll casting. The front taper is 32 feet for weights 2 to 5 and 36 feet for 6 to 9, with a 4-foot rear taper and an 8-foot handling section. The body is bicolor ivory and orange, with the color change behind the head. Half sizes come from the separate Signature Plus line, which the maker aims at faster-action or hard-to-line rods. We track a Signature Plus 7F and a Textured 4F.
Short Nymph and Short Bass. Shorter-headed variants on the same family, in weights 3 and 7 for the Nymph and an 8 for the Bass. Their names say what the maker had in mind. Whether a short head helps you depends on your casting stroke.
Which to pick between Classic and Signature? If you cast a lot of distance and like a line that loads fast, the Classic is the one the maker describes that way. If you fish at close range and want an easier line to present, the Signature is the maker's refinement for that.
The Long Belly lines
The Long Belly Classic is a 100-foot line in weights 3 to 8 with a welded front loop. The maker says it combines features of double taper and weight-forward lines and behaves like a double taper for the first 30 feet or more. The head is 46 to 56 feet, the coating is J3, and the stated strengths are roll casts and mending. We also track a Bamboo Special Weight Forward in a 3-weight, a 100-foot floating line. Check the maker's page for the weight your rod needs, because the listing's 3 is only the weight of that one size.
Short heads and the Ambush family
The Ambush is for tight spots. The maker describes a short, heavy head with a short rear taper, built to load the rod quickly, turn over weighted flies and indicators, and make roll casting and shooting line easier. It is floating, two-tone chartreuse and blue, in a full line with integrated shooting line or head only. The maker mentions single-hand, single Spey, Skagit, Scandi, switch and double Spey casting, and trout and light steelhead on small to large rivers. We track an Ambush Floating 4F, an Ambush Short Floating 250 grain, an Ambush Hover 6I and an Ambush Floating Shooting Head 12F.
If you are unsure what the Spey words mean, our spey rod page, the guide to what a spey rod is and the Skagit vs Scandi guide explain them.
Warm-water, saltwater and Spey lines
Bermuda Triangle Taper. The maker built this one for the heat of tropical flats and boat decks, rated for 70 degrees Fahrenheit and above. It has a braided monofilament core and a harder outer layer meant to resist heat, a 32-foot head in a Triangle Taper Salt profile, a 105-foot length, and weights from 5 to 13. The Lost Tip version is a sink-tip. A GIANTS floating line covers weights 13 to 15 on a braided monofilament core with a 55 pound break strength listed. (There is a Triangle Taper and a Bermuda Triangle Taper, and the second one is for hot water, not for making your line disappear.)
Sea Wulff. A floating and an intermediate Monoclear version, both 105 feet, in weights 7 to 12, with a front loop. The intermediate lists a sink rate of 1.25 to 1.75 inches per second.
Spey. The Long Spey Triangle Taper Floating is a 120-foot line, with a 65 to 80 foot head and a 40 to 55 foot running line, built for single- and double-handed rods. The Super Spey Floating is listed at 7/8. Match the line to the printed grain or weight range on your rod.
Sinking and sink-tip lines
The Midstream Triangle Taper Full Sink is a 90-foot line that the maker lists at 3 inches per second. The Ambush Hover and Bermuda Lost Tip are sink-tip. Full-sinking lines are a specialty tool for lakes and deep runs. A sink-tip is the more common first choice if a floating line will not get your fly down.
Backing
We track one backing: a braided gel spun ultra thin backing, 30 pound test, 2,500 yards. The maker's page lists blue as the only color, 20, 30 and 50 pound test, and spool lengths of 300, 600, 1200 and 2500 yards. It calls it small diameter backing and says saltwater anglers like it for the capacity, but gives no diameter, so I cannot quote one. Gel spun is thinner for the same strength than Dacron, which is why it is popular on saltwater reels. For a trout reel you do not need 2,500 yards of anything. Our backing page lists other brands.
Warranty
The maker's warranty page says a fly line comes with a 1 year warranty against defects and durability. It excludes abuse or neglect, improper coatings and dressings, and welded loops. Welded loops have a separate 30 day guarantee. If a loop fails, the page tells you to cut it off and tie a heavy monofilament piece or a leader straight onto the line with a nail knot. Claims go by post with a receipt and a note describing the problem, and the line must arrive in a coil, not a tangle. Read the page before you rely on it, and keep the receipt.
How long it lasts, and how to look after it
A fly line is a coated cord, and the coating wears. Dirt, sunscreen and heat all shorten its life. Our guides to how long fly line lasts and how to clean a fly line cover the signs of a worn line and the routine that makes one last.
How to choose
- Trout, general river fishing. Triangle Taper Classic or Signature, in the weight your rod is rated for.
- Roll casts and mending, slow rods. Long Belly Classic.
- Tight cover and heavy flies. Ambush, with the head weight matched to your rod's range.
- Warm saltwater. Bermuda Triangle Taper, floating or lost tip.
- Spey rods. A Spey line, after you check the rod's grain range.
For other brands, the fly lines section and the floating line page set Royal Wulff beside everyone else we track.

Questions about Royal Wulff
What is a Royal Wulff Triangle Taper line?
It is a weight-forward style line the maker credits to Lee Wulff. On the maker's Classic page the line has a continuous front taper, a long weighted butt section and light running line, so it casts like a shooting head while keeping accuracy. The Classic is listed at 90 feet, floating, for coldwater at 75 degrees Fahrenheit and below.
What is the difference between Triangle Taper Classic and Signature?
Both are 90-foot floating lines for coldwater. The maker calls the Signature a refinement of the Triangle Taper, meant to cast and present more easily while keeping the original's roll-casting ability, and gives it a 32-foot front taper for weights 2 to 5 and 36 feet for 6 to 9. The Classic lists head lengths of 36 and 40 feet across weights 2 to 9. Half sizes come through the separate Signature Plus line.
What are Bermuda Triangle Taper lines for?
The maker designed them for warm water, 70 degrees Fahrenheit and above, with a braided monofilament core and a harder outer layer meant to resist heat. The Bermuda Floating on its page is a 105-foot line in weights 5 to 13 with a Triangle Taper Salt profile. A GIANTS version covers 13 to 15.
What is the Royal Wulff warranty on fly lines?
Per the maker's warranty page, a fly line has a 1 year warranty against defects and durability. Abuse, neglect, improper coatings and dressings and welded loops are excluded, and welded loops carry a separate 30 day guarantee. If a loop fails, the maker suggests cutting it off and tying a heavy monofilament piece or a leader directly to the line with a nail knot.
Who founded Royal Wulff?
Sources disagree on the year. Two retailer pages say Lee Wulff founded the brand in 1980, while a third says Royal Wulff was founded in 1982 by Joan and Lee Wulff. We found no primary source from the company that settles it, so we give both dates.
Does Royal Wulff sell backing?
On Amazon US we track one: a blue braided gel spun ultra thin backing at 30 pound test in a 2,500 yard spool. The maker's page lists 20, 30 and 50 pound test and several spool lengths, and calls it a small diameter backing without giving the diameter.
