Wild Water Fly Rods, Kits and Combos

A Wild Water fly rod is usually a four-piece graphite rod, sold alone or in a complete starter kit with a reel, line, backing, leader and flies, from a company that says it has offered starter packages since 2006. At our last check (October 2026) we track 32 Wild Water products on Amazon US: 11 standalone rods, 18 kits and combos and three reels. The rods run from a 5-foot-6 3-weight to an 11-foot 7-weight switch rod, plus tenkara rods, and the maker's warranty is a repair or replacement for a fee, not a free fix.

Which Wild Water model, if any

Wild Water Standard Fly Fishing Kit, 5/6wt Rod, 9ft, 4-piece

Good day on the water for

an all-round trout outfit, since the maker lists a 9-foot, four-piece, medium-fast graphite 5/6 rod with a cork handle, a disc-drag reel and floating line, backing, leader and flies.

Leave it on the shelf if

you already own a reel, or you want a stated line weight, because the rod covers a 5 to 6 range. The warranty is a repair-for-a-fee program, not a free replacement.

See it on Amazon

Wild Water Standard Fly Fishing Kit, 3wt Rod, 5'6"ft, 4-piece

Good day on the water for

tiny streams and backpacking trips with a 5-foot-6 3-weight, four-piece rod in a hard tube, sold with a 75 mm die-cast reel and WF-3F line.

Leave it on the shelf if

you cast to rising fish at distance, or you fish open water where a short rod can't mend line. A rod this short gives up reach for portability.

See it on Amazon

Wild Water Standard Fly Fishing Kit, 5wt Rod, 9ft, 7-piece

Good day on the water for

travel or a pack, since the maker lists a 9-foot, 5-weight rod in seven pieces with a listed rod weight of 4 oz, for trout, panfish and small bass.

Leave it on the shelf if

you cast a lot, since more joints mean more to seat and check. The reel is cast aluminum with a convertible retrieve.

See it on Amazon

Wild Water Euro Nymphing Fly Rod, 10ft, 3wt, 4-piece

Good day on the water for

close-contact nymphing on a stream, with a 10-foot, 3-weight, four-piece graphite rod that the maker lists as medium-fast.

Leave it on the shelf if

you want a reel and line in the same box (this is rod only) or you plan to cast big dry flies. It carries the maker's repair-for-a-fee warranty.

See it on Amazon

Wild Water 7 weight Switch Fly Rod, 11ft, 4 Piece

Good day on the water for

two-handed casting on a larger river with an 11-foot 7-weight switch rod, four-piece, medium-fast graphite.

Leave it on the shelf if

you want a stated warranty or a rod weight in ounces, since our data gives neither, or you need a rod for small trout water. A switch rod is a short two-handed rod.

See it on Amazon

Wild Water A-Series 5/6 Die Cast Fly Reel

Good day on the water for

a spare or first reel for a 5- or 6-weight rod, cast aluminum, 3.35 inches across and listed as preloaded.

Leave it on the shelf if

you want a stated drag type or arbor, since our data gives neither. The maker's reel pages are the place to check the details.

Who Wild Water is

Wild Water Fly Fishing describes itself on its home page as a seller of "the best package for the money since 2006." Its About page is written in the first person by the founder, who is not named. The page says the company grew out of a prototype called the Pocket Fly Fisherman, which the founder invented at age 13, and that Wild Water was created for the beginner who is new to fly fishing. The site gives a mailing address in Ontario, New York, and says customer service is located in the USA.

The maker says it designs and tests each component of its packages. It does not name its suppliers or say where the rods and reels are made, so I won't. Like any maker's statement about its own testing, I can't check it from outside.

Wild Water sells fly fishing kits (including tenkara and fiberglass-rod kits), rods, reels, flies and fly assortments, fly tying materials, lines, leaders, tippet, backing, accessories, and some spinning and casting gear, according to its home page. Our table covers only what is on Amazon US.

What Wild Water sells on Amazon US now

At our last check (October 2026) we track 32 Wild Water products on Amazon US. There are 11 standalone rods (five of them tenkara), 18 kits and combos, and three reels. Most values come from the maker's own descriptions, with only the tenkara rods' blank material taken from the Amazon listing, so expect more maker marks under the values here than on most budget brands. A claimed mark is a maker claim with no named lab or standard. Listing means the Amazon listing says so and the maker doesn't confirm it. A dash means we couldn't confirm it.

The kits

The kits are Wild Water's core product on Amazon, and they follow a pattern. Each non-tenkara kit lists a four-piece (occasionally seven-piece) graphite rod with a cork handle and a machined aluminum reel seat, a die-cast or CNC-machined aluminum reel with a disc drag, a floating weight-forward line, backing, a leader and flies, and a hard tube. They are named Standard and Deluxe, and the sizes in our data are:

How does a Deluxe differ from a Standard of the same size? In our data, mostly in the kit contents and the reel size and model. The maker does not explain a tiering rule, so I'd compare the reel and the box line for line rather than trust the name. Read the "In the box" column on the table above.

The 3/4-weight and 5/6-weight line ranges are worth understanding. A 3/4 rod is built to be fished with a 3 or a 4-weight line. The kit ships with a WF-3F line, which means weight-forward, floating, 3-weight. A 5/6 rod ships with WF-5F. If you want the heavier line in the range, you buy it separately. For the logic behind it, see our fly rod weight chart and fly line weight chart.

The standalone rods

Wild Water sells a few rods without a reel. The 3/4-weight comes at 7 feet and 9 feet, the 5-weight at 8 feet, the 3-weight at 5 feet 6 inches (the Wild Country), the euro nymphing rod at 10 feet, and the switch rod at 11 feet in a 7-weight. All are four-piece, medium-fast graphite with cork handles and an all-aluminum reel seat with a CNC-machined sliding hood. Three of them list a "sock only" case, which means the rod comes in a cloth sleeve with no hard tube. If you travel, a hard tube is worth looking for; see fly rod setup for how rods break down and go back together.

The euro nymphing rod is 10 feet and a 3-weight, which is the long, light format used for euro nymphing, a close-contact style with a weighted fly and a thin leader. Our guide on what euro nymphing is and the euro nymph rod page cover it. The switch rod is 11 feet and a 7-weight, a short two-handed rod that you can cast overhead or with a spey cast; the spey rod vs switch rod guide shows the difference.

Tenkara

The tenkara range is the widest part of the catalog. Standalone rods are 6, 8 and 12 feet, plus a Zoom rod at 12 to 13 feet and a Shorty Zoom at 7 to 8 feet. Listed weights are 1.6 oz for the 6-foot, 1.8 oz for the 8-foot, 2 oz for the Shorty, 3 oz for the 12-foot and 3.5 oz for the Zoom. The tenkara kits cover 12 feet, 7 to 8 feet, 12 to 13 feet and 14 to 16 feet (the "Big Game"), and list line and flies, with no reel. Tenkara is fished with a line tied directly to the rod tip, which is why there is no reel.

Our guides on what is tenkara and tenkara vs fly fishing will help if you're deciding between the formats, and the tenkara rod page lists other brands.

The reels

Three reels are in the data. The A-Series reels are cast aluminum reels in 3/4 (2.95 inches across) and 5/6 (3.35 inches across), and both are listed as preloaded. The Fortis is a CNC-machined aluminum reel in the listing with no line-weight range in our data. We have no drag type, weight or arbor for any of the three, so I'd read the listing before buying for those details. Our fly reel size guide explains how to match a reel to a rod.

Warranty

This is the part I'd read twice. The maker calls its program a lifetime warranty, and several rods and kits in our data carry the word "Lifetime". But the terms page does not use "lifetime" or set a period of coverage. What it says is that Wild Water will repair or replace a damaged fly rod for a flat fee per claim, for the original owner, and that the fee has to be paid in advance. You send all sections of the rod to the company's New York address with a return address, and the company won't act until those steps are done. Misuse, abuse, neglect, modification, loss, theft, fire and bamboo rods are excluded. If the model is no longer sold, the company may substitute another one. The maker also says the warranty information form should be returned within 30 days of purchase. The page shows a revision date of 10/13, so check the current terms first.

In plain words: it is a repair service, not a free replacement. Whether the fee makes sense depends on what the kit cost you. The terms page does not state the fee, and I'm not going to guess it. The terms page describes coverage of fly rods, and says nothing about reels.

Rods arrive in sections and go back in sections, so photograph the warranty form and the order confirmation the day the box arrives, and keep the hard tube if you get one.

How to choose

Start with water and fish. For small streams and backpacking, a 7-foot 3/4 or the 5-foot-6 3-weight. For general trout water, the 9-foot 5/6, which is the most common size in the data. For travel, the seven-piece 5-weight. For bass and heavier flies, the 7/8 or 9/10. For nymphing, the euro rod. For the simplest possible setup, tenkara.

Next, decide whether you need the kit. If you do not own a reel and line, the kit saves matching them yourself, which is where first-time buyers go wrong. If you do own a reel, the standalone rods are cleaner. Last, remember that a starter kit is a starting point. Plenty of anglers upgrade the reel or line first. Our beginner gear guide shows what else you will want, and the starter kits page applies a transparent rule across brands.

What this page cannot tell you

Nobody here has cast a Wild Water rod, and I did not read the Amazon reviews, so I have no buyer summary to add. I don't have rod weights in ounces for most of the rods, or drag details for the reels. If you are searching for a Wild Water fly rod review, the honest answer is that the best sources are the buyers who have used one, so read the three-star reviews on the listing. This page is a snapshot of October 2026.

Where Wild Water shows up

Questions about Wild Water

What is the difference between the Wild Water Standard and Deluxe kits?

On Amazon US the Standard and Deluxe kits are the same format: a four-piece graphite rod, a die-cast aluminum reel, line, backing, leader and flies, in a hard tube. In our data the differences are mostly in size and in the reel. The Deluxe 9/10 kit pairs a 9-foot rod with a 103 mm die-cast reel, the Deluxe 5/6 with an 85 mm reel, and the Deluxe 3/4 with a 75 mm reel. The maker's own pages are where to compare what else differs, because the Amazon data does not list a separate quality tier.

Is the Wild Water fly rod combo good for beginners?

It's built for them: the maker says it created Wild Water for the beginner who is new to fly fishing, and every kit lists a reel, floating line, backing, leader and flies. I haven't used one, and I can't say how a rod casts. What I can say is what to check: the line weight must match the rod, a 5/6 kit covers most trout water, and a medium-fast action, which the maker lists for every non-tenkara rod in our data, is forgiving at short range.

What is the Wild Water rod warranty?

The maker calls it a lifetime warranty, but the terms page describes something narrower. It says Wild Water will repair or replace a damaged rod for a flat fee per claim, for the original owner, and the fee must be paid before the company acts. Misuse, abuse, neglect, modification, loss, theft, fire and bamboo rods are excluded. You send all sections of the rod to the company's New York address and give a return address. The terms page is dated 10/13, so check the current version before you send anything.

Does Wild Water make a tenkara rod?

Yes. In our data there are tenkara rods at 6, 8, 12 and 12 to 13 feet, plus a 7 to 8 foot Shorty Zoom rod, and tenkara kits in 12 feet, 7 to 8 feet, 12 to 13 feet and 14 to 16 feet. Tenkara kits list a rod, line and flies, with no reel. Listed weights run from 1.6 oz for the 6-foot rod to 3.5 oz for the 12 to 13 foot Zoom rod. Read our guide on what tenkara is if the format is new to you.

Who owns Wild Water and where is it based?

The maker's About page is a first-person founder story and does not name the founder. It gives a mailing address in Ontario, New York, and says customer service is located in the USA. It says the brand grew from a prototype called the Pocket Fly Fisherman, which the founder invented at age 13. I can't tell you more about ownership.

Is there a Wild Water fly rod review I can trust?

Not from us: nobody here has tested these rods, and I have not read the Amazon reviews, so I can't summarize what buyers say. Our sources are the maker's pages and the Amazon listings. When you read reviews on Amazon, start with the three-star ones, because they tend to name specifics such as how the reel works or how the rod handles.

What size Wild Water kit should I buy?

For most trout rivers, the 9-foot 5/6 kit. For small streams, brushy water and backpacking, the 3/4 kits at 7 feet or the 3-weight at 5 feet 6 inches. For bass, pike and heavier flies, the 7/8 or 9/10 kit. The maker lists species for each size: the 7/8 and 9/10 kits name large trout, pike, stripers, redfish, salmon, bonefish and bass. Treat those lists as the seller's guidance.
