Which Northern Flight model, if any
Northern Flight waders on Amazon US
We found no Northern Flight waders on Amazon US at our last check (October 2026). The line belongs to Cabela's, and the pages I could open about it are magazine and retailer pages, not a maker's data sheet. Cabela's own product pages blocked my reading, so I cannot quote its specifications or its warranty. Everything below says where it comes from.
What Northern Flight is
Northern Flight is a Cabela's brand. Field and Stream's roundup of Cabela's waders includes a Northern Flight front-zip hunting wader, and a Field and Stream test of neoprene waders names the Cabela's Northern Flight One-Strap Waders. Cabela's was founded in December 1961 in Chappell, Nebraska, by Dick and Jim Cabela, and has been a subsidiary of Bass Pro Shops since the purchase completed on September 25, 2017, per Wikipedia. I could not find who manufactures Northern Flight waders for Cabela's, so I won't say.
What the line looks like
Three descriptions give a picture.
Front-zip hunting waders. Field and Stream describes them as insulated with 200 g Thinsulate in the upper and rubber boots with 1,600 g of insulation, a natural cork insole, a thick tread for mud, reinforced knees and seat, two front D-rings for calls and gloves, and a zippered water-resistant pocket. The article recommends them for cold waterfowl hunting, where warmth matters most. It also has a naming wrinkle: the heading says Northern Flight, while the body calls the same wader the Renegade II. That is a good reason to match the model name and the product page, not the review.
One-strap waders. A Field and Stream test says they have an ambidextrous one-strap suspender that can be moved to the offhand side so it does not interfere with shooting, deep shell holders, reinforced knees and a waterproof pouch. Testers disagreed about the strap and one said the pouch could be improved.
One-strap hybrid chest waders. A reseller listing describes a breathable upper, a neoprene waist and legs with an Armor-Flex exterior and PrimaLoft boots with heavier fill in the toes. It is a third-party listing, so treat it as a description, not a specification.
The pattern across all three is consistent: bootfoot, insulated, hunting-first.
What that tells you
Northern Flight waders sit in the same category as KUIU, Drake, Banded and LaCrosse's hunting pairs. The category has its own priorities.
- Warmth over walking. Boots at 1,600 g are for standing.
- Gear management. Shell holders, D-rings and pouches are features for hunters. Anglers rarely need them.
- Brush. Reinforced knees and seat matter when you crawl through cover.
- One-strap or two-strap. A one-strap suspender keeps the shooting side clear; a two-strap design distributes load more evenly. This is a preference.
If those are the features you want, the alternatives in the table are comparable. If you came for an angling wader, you are on the wrong shelf.
How the alternatives were picked
The table shows 15 alternatives, picked by a written rule:
- Same type: waders.
- Hunting use: only waders that the maker or the listing puts in hunting, or fishing-and-hunting, use, which suits a hunting brand.
- The closest price tier, then the most maker-published specs: foot type, construction, warranty and fit options.
- No Amazon house brands.
The result is a table of 15 bootfoot waders from Banded, Drake, Avery and Frogg Toggs, with insulated and uninsulated, breathable and neoprene pairs among them. There is no stockingfoot wader in it.
Matching Northern Flight features to the alternatives
Front zip. Banded's Black Label Elite Zipper, and Drake's Guardian Elite and BMF1600 waders, list front zips in the maker data. A front zip makes the wader easier to put on and take off. It is also, as I like to say, a seam that opens on purpose, and an opening that must be kept clean and closed.
1,600 g boots. Banded, Drake and Avery list them on the insulated pairs. Drake's Hardline drops to 800 g.
Reinforced knees. Listed for the Drake BMF1600 (Kevlar), Avery and Frogg Toggs pairs.
Body insulation. Banded's Phantom X gives a comfort range, 32 to 70 degrees F uninsulated and -10 to 50 degrees F insulated. Drake describes its pairs as fully insulated, hybrid or uninsulated. Avery lists HARS body insulation.
Warranty. One year for Frogg Toggs and Avery. Two years for Banded. Three years for most Drake pairs, four for the BMF1600.
How to read the table
Each value carries a mark. "Maker" means the manufacturer's page states it. "Claimed" means a maker claim with no independent standard, which covers layer counts and membranes. "Listing" means the Amazon listing says so. A dash means we could not confirm it.
Foot. Bootfoot means the boot is attached. For stockingfoot comparisons, see bootfoot vs stockingfoot waders.
Material type and layers. Breathable shells list a layer count (three or five in this table), and neoprene pairs list a thickness in mm.
Insulation. Boot insulation in grams is the main figure. Body insulation descriptions are in the "More specs" toggle.
Fit. Short, tall, stout, king and Husky options. For a bootfoot wader, the boot size is separate from the body.
Choosing
Ask these questions in order.
- How cold is the water and the air? Below freezing, choose 1,600 g boots and a lined body. Mild and variable, choose an uninsulated body and layer.
- How much will you move? A lot, and you should look at lighter boots (800 g) or a stockingfoot wader.
- Do you kneel or crawl? Choose reinforced knees and seat.
- Is a front zip worth the extra part to maintain? It is easier to put on, and it is one more component to keep clean.
- What is the warranty, and who stands behind it?
Warmth is more than the gram figure
The gram number on a bootfoot wader describes the boot. It says nothing about your thighs, your back or your hands. A wader with 1,600 g boots and an uninsulated body is warm below the knee and as warm as your layers elsewhere. A fully insulated body is warm all over and hot the moment you move. The right amount depends on how much you sit. In our data, Drake lists its pairs as fully insulated, hybrid (insulated legs, non-insulated upper) or uninsulated, and Banded gives a degree range for the Phantom X. Those descriptions tell you more than the boot figure does.
Neoprene adds a different kind of warmth: the material itself insulates, and thickness matters. The Frogg Toggs Amphib pairs and the Drake Buckshot list 3.5 mm. Neoprene does not breathe, so it holds sweat as well as heat.
Boot fit in bootfoot waders
The boot is half the wader. A boot that is too small compresses its insulation and cools your feet, and one that is too large lets your foot slide and blister. Try the pair with the sock you will wear in the cold, stand and squat, and check that your toes can move. Several makers in the table list boot sizes separately from body sizes, from 5 to 18 for Banded's Phantom X pairs to 8 to 14 for Drake's. If the maker offers short, tall, stout or king body options, those matter as much as the label size.
Cold-water safety
Cold water is a serious hazard whatever you wear. Insulated chest waders are heavy, and if water enters them after a fall they are hard to move in. Wear a snug wading belt, do not wade past the depth where you can recover, tell someone where you are going, and in boats or open water wear a life jacket. A wader is not a flotation device.
If you buy Northern Flight waders elsewhere
- Match the exact model name. The Renegade II/Northern Flight confusion above is the kind of thing that sends you home with the wrong pair.
- Check the insulation figure and what it refers to. In bootfoot waders it is usually the boot.
- Read the warranty and the return policy on the store's page, and keep the receipt.
- Check the size chart for the exact model. I have no Northern Flight size data. Our wader size chart guide explains how to measure.
- Wear a wading belt over any chest wader. A snug belt limits how much water enters in a fall. Do not wade deeper than you can recover from, and be careful in cold water.
Care
Rinse off mud, dry the waders inside out away from heaters and direct sun, and store them hanging or loosely rolled. Insulated boots need longer to dry; stuffing them loosely with dry paper or using a boot dryer set to low is gentler than a heater. See how to clean waders and how to store waders.
The short version
Northern Flight is Cabela's warm, hunting-first bootfoot line. If you want that, compare it with the front-zip and 1,600 g pairs in the table and weigh the warranty. If you want to walk a river, skip the whole category and start with stockingfoot waders.

Questions about Northern Flight
Are Northern Flight waders on Amazon?
Not at our last check in October 2026. We looked for Northern Flight waders on Amazon US and found no live listing we could confirm. The line is a Cabela's brand, so Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops are the first places to look. Stock changes, and the answer may change.
Who makes Northern Flight waders?
Northern Flight is a Cabela's brand. Field and Stream's review of Cabela's waders lists a Northern Flight front-zip hunting wader, and Cabela's Canada lists Northern Flight products such as a wading jacket and a hunting bib. I could not find who manufactures the waders for Cabela's. Cabela's has been a subsidiary of Bass Pro Shops since 2017, according to Wikipedia.
Are Northern Flight waders insulated?
The front-zip model that Field and Stream describes has a 200 g Thinsulate lining in the upper and rubber boots with 1,600 g of insulation. A separate reseller listing for a one-strap hybrid model describes neoprene legs, a breathable upper and PrimaLoft boot insulation. Insulation differs by model, so read the figure for the exact pair.
Are Northern Flight waders good for fishing?
They are hunting waders. Field and Stream recommends the front-zip pair for cold waterfowl mornings in a marsh. They are bootfoot, heavily insulated and built for standing, which is the opposite of what most anglers want for walking a river. For fishing, look at stockingfoot waders.
What are good alternatives to Northern Flight waders?
For a front-zip, insulated bootfoot wader, the closest matches in the table are Banded's Black Label Elite Zipper and Drake's Guardian Elite front-zip pairs, which list 1,600 g boots and two- to three-year warranties. For lighter boots, the Drake Hardline lists 800 g. For plain neoprene, the Frogg Toggs Amphib is the match.
How should I size bootfoot waders?
You need a boot size and a body fit. Start with your shoe size and leave room for the thick sock you will wear in the cold, then check the body options: short, tall, stout or king where the maker offers them. I have no Northern Flight size data to give you, so use Cabela's size chart for that model.
What is the Northern Flight waders warranty?
I could not open Cabela's product pages and so cannot give you the warranty for these waders. Read the warranty on the product page and the store's return policy before you buy, and keep your receipt. For the alternatives, the table shows warranties from one to four years, per the makers.
