What's in this tableNeoprene waders, sorted by stated neoprene thickness.
What neoprene waders are, and who they suit
Neoprene is a closed-cell foam rubber, and the material itself does the insulating, so thickness is the first thing to read. That's why it is the usual cold-water choice. The frogg toggs buying guide calls neoprene the warm option for cold weather, durable in rough country, and notes that conventional neoprene isn't breathable. It also puts thickness at about 3 mm for fishing and 5 mm for colder weather.
At our last check (October 2026) the table held 44 pairs. Nearly all are bootfoot, and where the height is confirmed it is chest. Most are labeled for hunting or for fishing and hunting, and there are men's, women's and kids' cuts in the data, and a small number of stockingfoot designs.
Neoprene suits you if you stand or sit in cold water for hours: a duck blind, a lake edge, a winter bank. It suits you less if you walk, because it holds heat and you'll sweat. Neoprene is the only fabric I know of that can make a person say "I'm freezing" and "I'm boiling" within the same hour. (It's the same pair, and the difference is whether you moved.) For long walks, breathable waders are the better fit, and our guide on breathable vs neoprene waders compares them.
Thickness: what the millimeters tell you
The table is sorted by stated neoprene thickness, thickest first. In the data:
- 5 mm to 5.5 mm is the thick end, on pairs from HISEA, Avery, LaCrosse, Rogers, TIDEWE and 8 Fans.
- 4 mm to 4.5 mm is the middle, with the most pairs from HISEA, Bassdash, Gator Waders, Gonex and others.
- 3.5 mm is the thinner end, and it appears on pairs from frogg toggs, LaCrosse, Drake, Rogers, TIDEWE, Compass 360, Caddis and others.
Thicker is warmer and heavier, and stiffer to move in. That's the trade, and it's the same one the frogg toggs guide describes. The numbers come from the maker or the listing, and the table's mark tells you which. A "listing" mark means the Amazon page says so and the maker hasn't confirmed it. Many thicknesses in this table carry that mark, so I treat them as the seller's statement.
Thickness is also measured in different places on different pairs. A maker may quote the thickness of the body fabric, and the boot has its own insulation. I can't tell you more than the maker does, so the rule is to compare within one maker's line and to open More specs for what's stated.
Boot grams: the other number
Most neoprene waders in the data are bootfoot, and many list boot insulation in grams: 200, 400, 600, 800, 1,000, 1,200, 1,400 or 1,600. Boot grams describe the boot only, not the body. A 5 mm wader with a 200 g boot is warm in the body and may leave your feet cold; a 3.5 mm wader with a 1,600 g boot is the opposite. If your feet are the cold part, look at the grams. If your core is, look at the millimeters.
None of the makers in our data names a shared test behind the grams, so compare them within one brand's line. Our insulated waders page sorts by boot grams if that's your main question, and the hunting waders page explains where boot insulation fits.
Bootfoot or stockingfoot in neoprene
Bootfoot is the default: one piece, no gravel in the boot, nothing else to buy. Several pairs list a cleated rubber sole, mostly as listing values. Cleats are for traction in mud and soft ground, and a neoprene boot isn't built for miles of hiking. I'd treat the sole as a tool for short moves between a vehicle and a standing spot.
Stockingfoot neoprene is the minority. Caddis and frogg toggs each list a stockingfoot pair in the data. You wear wading boots over the neoprene sock, which gives you ankle support and a choice of sole. It is also a second purchase.
Our bootfoot waders page and the chest waders page cover those types more widely.
Fit and sizing
Neoprene fits close, and the layers you wear under it add bulk. Size for what you will wear, not for what you wear in the shop. Boot sizes run from 4 to 14 across the data, with kids' sizes at the lower end. Body sizes vary by maker, from Small to 2XL on some pairs, with stout, husky, big and regular options on others. Frogg toggs, for example, lists Husky boot sizes alongside regular ones in our data.
I don't copy size charts. Use the maker's chart for the exact model: frogg toggs, Banded, Bassdash and Drake publish theirs. Our wader size chart guide explains the measuring and the labels. Buyer feedback on fit for neoprene is mixed across models, so I don't generalize it here.
Women's, men's and kids' neoprene
The table includes men's, women's, unisex and kids' pairs. Women's cuts come from HISEA, Bassdash, Gator Waders, LaCrosse, TIDEWE, Rogers and frogg toggs. For the broader set, see the women's waders and men's waders pages. Kids' neoprene pairs come from 8 Fans, HISEA, Gonex, Gator Waders, Rogers and TIDEWE, and the kids waders page covers those and the safety rules that matter more than the gear.
How to read the table
Each value carries a small mark.
- Maker means the manufacturer's own page states it.
- Claimed means a maker claim, such as a thickness or layer count, with no independent lab named.
- Listing means it comes from the Amazon listing only.
- — means not confirmed. We do not guess.
The columns are Model, Height, Foot, Material type, Insulation, Fit and Warranty. Thickness, boot grams, sole and camo pattern sit under More specs. In the neoprene data, warranty is most often one year, with a few longer terms such as Drake's three years, and it is the maker's wording. A dash in a filter column usually means missing data, not a missing feature. If a pair says "all-season" in the listing, ask which season, and in which water.
How to choose
By water. Cold, still water and long hours standing: go to 4.5 mm and up, with a 1,000 g boot or more. Cool water and short sessions: 3.5 mm is plenty. Warm water: skip neoprene.
By movement. The more you walk, the less neoprene suits you. If you must walk, pick the thinner pair and the lighter boot, and think about stockingfoot.
By season. Neoprene's range is narrow compared with a breathable wader plus layers. A breathable pair adapts to a day that warms up. A neoprene pair is the temperature it is.
By budget. I won't name prices. I'll say that cheaper neoprene waders are not a sin if you know how many seasons you expect. The warranty is part of what you're paying for, so read it. The budget waders page applies a written rule to the data.
Common mistakes
- Buying the thickest by default. Thick neoprene is warm and heavy. If you walk, it's the wrong choice.
- Ignoring the boot. A wader is only as warm as its coldest part.
- Sizing for a thin sock. Cold-weather socks take space, and a tight boot is a cold boot.
- Storing wet or hot. Dry the waders fully, away from direct heat, and follow the maker's care instructions. Our guides on storing waders and cleaning waders cover the routine.
Safety: neoprene is not a life jacket
Neoprene is not something to rely on for flotation, and waders full of water are heavy. The Orvis wading guide says a fall in any depth or current can fill waders with water, and it calls a wading belt, next to a life jacket, the most important piece of gear to wear with waders. Seattle Children's notes that sudden immersion in cold water can cause drowning within minutes, even for strong swimmers, and says a life jacket should be worn on the water regardless of temperature.
My rules, as editorial advice and not medical advice:
- Wear a snug wading belt over chest waders.
- Carry a wading staff on uneven or soft bottoms.
- Take short steps, face upstream when turning, and avoid wading above the knees in fast water.
- Wear a life jacket on the water, and keep a dry change of clothes within reach.
- Turn back if you start to shiver or feel uncomfortable.
Care and repair
Rinse the waders, let them dry inside and out, and store them loosely. For leaks and holes, our guides on finding a leak and wader repair cover the fix, and the repair kits page covers the supplies.

Questions people ask
What are neoprene waders?
They are waders made from neoprene, a closed-cell foam rubber. The material insulates, so thicker neoprene is warmer, and it does not let vapor out the way a breathable membrane fabric does. Most pairs in our data are chest-high bootfoot waders, with the boot attached.
What thickness of neoprene is best?
No thickness is best on its own. The frogg toggs buying guide describes roughly 3 mm for fishing and 5 mm for colder conditions. In our data, thicknesses run from 3.5 mm to 5.5 mm. Choose the thicker end for standing in cold water and the thinner end if you walk or the water is milder.
Are 5 mm neoprene waders warm enough for winter?
It depends on the water, the air, your layers and how much you move. A 5 mm pair is at the warm end of what the data offers, and several 5 mm pairs add 1,000 to 1,600 grams of boot insulation. Those are maker figures, not a promise for a given temperature. Add layers underneath, and know when to get out.
Are neoprene waders waterproof?
The material is. What matters in practice is the seams, the boot join and the zipper if there is one, and the warranty behind them. In our data most neoprene pairs state a one-year warranty, and a few state more. Read the exact wording, and note that a waterproof claim from a listing is not a lab result.
Are neoprene waders good for fly fishing?
For standing in cold water, yes. For walking, they run hot and are heavy compared with breathable waders. A fly angler who hikes to the river is usually better off in breathable stockingfoot. A few neoprene stockingfoot pairs exist in our data if you want the neoprene with a separate boot.
Do you need a wading belt with neoprene waders?
Yes, with chest waders. The Orvis wading guide calls a wading belt, next to a life jacket, the most important piece of gear to wear with waders, because it limits how much water fills the legs after a fall. Do not rely on neoprene to float you.
Do you review neoprene waders?
No. We do not test waders. This page reads the maker's published specifications and the Amazon listings, marks where each value comes from, and tells you how I'd weigh them. If you want a rule-based list, our best waders page applies one.
