How to Wear Hip Waders

To wear hip waders, step into them like tall boots or pull them up over your trousers, then fasten the loops, clips or adjustable straps at the top to your belt or waistband so they cannot slide down. Stockingfoot hip waders also need separate wading boots. Hip waders are meant for shallow water, roughly knee to thigh deep, so for anything deeper you want a different garment.

Hip waders, hip boots, and what they are

Hip waders reach your hips. That is the whole definition. Farm and Fleet puts it simply: hip waders reach your hips, while chest waders are one piece, resemble overalls and reach the chest, offering nearly twice the coverage. The words overlap in practice. The 1000 Flies page describes hip waders in the same breathable, waterproof fabric as full waders, with a thin soft fabric that feels more comfortable than rubber or neoprene hip boots. A Dive Bomb listing, by contrast, describes hip boots with a neoprene upper and a built-in sole. If you are comparing the two, our hip boots page covers boots with the sole attached and hip waders covers the rest.

Putting hip waders on

The pages I opened do not publish step-by-step instructions for putting them on, so I will describe what they do say and keep my own additions marked as such.

  1. Get the waders on. Hip waders are a short garment. Sit down, pull them over your feet and legs, and stand to pull them up to the hips. Stockingfoot hip waders end in a sock that goes inside a wading boot, so put the waders on first and the boots on right after. (This sequence is common sense, not a quote from a maker.)
  2. Attach the top. 1000 Flies says hip waders have loops or clips on the sides that fasten to your trouser waistband or belt, and also mentions length-adjustable straps. Dive Bomb says its hip boots have an adjustable strap with a buckle that secures to a belt or belt loop. So the answer to "how do I stop them falling down" is a belt or the waistband, using the loops or straps the waders came with.
  3. Adjust. Farm and Fleet says hip waders typically have a belt strap that helps hold them up as you move. The page does not describe how to adjust it. Walk a few steps, squat and step up onto a chair or log before you go near water, and shorten or lengthen the straps until they hold without pulling.

Quick-release buckles, where a model has them, make taking off easier. I did not find a page that says which hip waders have them, so check the listing.

Boots

How you handle footwear depends on the style.

Sizing the boot is part of the fit. If you are not sure which size to buy, our wader size chart guide shows how to measure and where the makers' own charts are.

How deep can you go?

Not deep. Farm and Fleet says hip waders suit water at around thigh or knee height, such as shallow streams, shorelines, shallow marshes and calm, small bodies of water. 1000 Flies recommends them for small streams and meadow streams, short sessions, summer, long walks to the water and travel between spots, and it gives no depth figure, only that they are for water that is not too deep and for anglers who wade occasionally and not far.

Treat the top of the waders as a hard limit. Water that goes over the top is in the waders, and a current that pushes you off balance in water at the top of a hip wader can get you wet quickly. I would pick a different garment well before the water gets near the limit. Farm and Fleet says chest waders protect better against unexpected drops, waves or sudden currents, and recommends pairing chest waders with a wader belt for added security. See chest waders and wading belts.

When hip waders are the right pick

The sources I opened say hip waders are:

They are the wrong choice for deep wading, boats with a lot of splash, or any water you do not know. If you want to see what is available, the waders page lists pairs by height, and waist waders sit between the two.

Hands checking hip wader seams before a trip

Before every trip

Farm and Fleet suggests inspecting waders for cracks or leaks before each outing, and rinsing and drying them after use. Do both. A short garment has fewer seams, but a leak in the boot or the seat is still a wet sock. For care, see our how to clean waders guide.

What I could not confirm

I found no source that gives a safe depth in inches, and I will not make one up. I also found no maker instruction for hip waders worn with a separate wading belt. If the manufacturer of your pair gives instructions, follow them.

Gary strapped his hip waders to a belt that was already holding up his trousers and discovered the trousers had a different opinion.

Questions people ask

How do you wear hip waders?

Put them on over your trousers, then attach the top to your belt or waistband. 1000 Flies says hip waders have loops or clips on the sides that fasten to the waistband or belt, and mentions length-adjustable straps for the same purpose. Dive Bomb describes its hip boots as secured with an adjustable strap and buckle to a belt or belt loop.

How do you wear chest waders?

Chest waders are one piece and reach the chest, like overalls, with shoulder straps that hold them up. Farm and Fleet describes them as offering nearly twice the coverage of hip waders. Our chest waders page has the details on putting them on and fit.

Do hip waders need a belt?

They need something to hold them up. Farm and Fleet says hip waders typically have a belt strap that helps hold them up as you move. Whether you add a wading belt is a separate question: the pages I opened discuss wading belts with chest waders, not hip waders.

How deep can I wade in hip waders?

Farm and Fleet says hip waders are best when the water stays around thigh or knee height, such as shallow streams, shorelines and calm, small bodies of water. 1000 Flies gives no depth number and says they are for water that is not too deep.

Do I need boots with hip waders?

It depends on the style. 1000 Flies says its hip waders are worn with separate wading boots, which it says give better stability and improve safety. Hip boots have the boot built in.
