What's in this tableHip waders that come up to the thigh and attach to a belt.
What hip waders are, and who they suit
Hip waders are the half-height option. They come up to the thigh and attach to a belt, so there is no bib and nothing over your torso. That makes them quicker to put on and cooler to wear than chest waders.
They suit people who stay in shallow water: small streams, ponds, shorelines and flats where the water stays around the knee. They also suit people who want a lighter, simpler pair for short trips. They do not suit deep or fast water, and they do not forgive a misstep into a hole. Frogg toggs puts it simply: hip waders are for shallow, low-current water, and you step up to waist or chest waders for anything more.
At our last check (October 2026), we tracked nine hip waders on Amazon US. That is a small set. Five are breathable, which in this group means stockingfoot or bootfoot pairs in breathable fabric, and four are nylon-and-PVC, all bootfoot. Chest and waist waders are covered on their own pages: chest waders and waist waders.
Hip waders and hip boots
The two names overlap. In our tables, hip waders are the wader-style pairs that attach to a belt, in bootfoot or stockingfoot, and hip boots are the one-piece rubber or PVC boot-and-leg pairs. A listing may use either word for either product, so look at the Foot and Material columns and the description before you decide. If you are looking at a one-piece rubber boot, the hip boots page is the better match.
How to read the table
- Height. Every row is a hip wader. For seven of the nine, the maker said so.
- Foot. Five are bootfoot and four are stockingfoot. Stockingfoot means a sock and a separate wading boot, which suits walking. Bootfoot has the boot attached. See stockingfoot waders and bootfoot waders.
- Material type. Breathable (five) or nylon-and-PVC (four).
- Insulation. Two pairs are listed as not insulated by the maker. The others show a dash.
- Fit. Men's (five), unisex (one), with three not confirmed. Sizes are under "More specs".
- Warranty. Stated for six of the nine. Four are one year, one is the three-year Drake wader warranty, and one is a one-year warranty for defects in materials and workmanship.
Under each value is a mark. maker means it is on the manufacturer's own page. claimed is a manufacturer's claim with no independent lab or standard named. listing means it came from the Amazon listing and is not confirmed by the maker. A dash means we did not find it, and we do not guess. Use the filters to narrow by foot and material, and sort by any column.
Bootfoot or stockingfoot hip waders
Bootfoot. One purchase, one fit. The boot is attached. Stated boot sizes in this set run from 3 to 14, and the Trudave pair lists men's and women's numbers together. The boot is usually built for standing and short walks. See the Drake EST Waterfowlers Hip Boot, which our data lists as a breathable bootfoot pair with three layers, a lug rubber sole and a three-year warranty, or the Frogg Toggs Rana II, which lists a felt or cleated sole option.
Stockingfoot. The leg ends in a sock, often neoprene, and you wear a separate wading boot over it. Gravel guards, the cuffs that keep grit out, are listed on four of the nine. The Frogg Toggs Canyon II, the Kylebooker KB006 and the Paramount Emerger are of this type in our data, along with the KastKing RiverWalker. The stockingfoot pairs lean breathable and are the closer match to what a fly angler wears. See the bootfoot vs stockingfoot guide.
PVC or breathable
Nylon-and-PVC. Frogg toggs calls PVC budget-friendly, waterproof and abrasion-resistant, and says PVC and rubber are less breathable than membrane fabrics. It is a reasonable choice for short, rough use.
Breathable. Lightweight, and the better choice if you walk. In this set, layers are stated for four pairs (three at 3-layer, one at 4-layer), and waterproof and breathability ratings are listed for two pairs, both from the Amazon listing, so I treat them as listing values, not the maker's. For ratings and layers in detail, see breathable waders. The Seam, incidentally, has fewer places to be dishonest on a hip wader than on a chest wader. Fewer is not none.
How to choose
By depth. Hip waders for shallow water only. If you are not sure how deep it gets, take a longer pair.
By walking. Walking a lot means stockingfoot with a good wading boot. Short trips and standing mean bootfoot.
By season. None of the hip waders in our data is listed as insulated. For cold water, look at insulated waders, or add layers under a breathable pair. Our what to wear under waders guide covers the layers.
By budget. I'll leave prices out of it. A lower-priced pair is reasonable if you know it may last fewer seasons, and the warranty row is part of what you are buying. Where one is stated, it runs from one to three years in this set.
By use. Fly fishing, small-water fishing and hunting all appear in the listings. Two pairs are listed for fly fishing, one for hunting, one for both fishing and hunting and one for general fishing, with four not confirmed.
Sizing
Bootfoot hip waders are sized by shoe size. Stockingfoot ones are sized by a body size such as small to 2XL, and the boot is sized separately. In this set, apparel sizes stated run from small or medium up to 2XL, and boot sizes from 3 to 14. Start from your shoe size, allow for thick socks, and check the chart for the exact model. Our wader size chart guide shows how to measure, and how to wear hip waders explains the belt.
(Gary bought hip waders because the water looked shallow. The water, as water does, disagreed.)
What the small data set means
Nine pairs is a thin shelf, and it shapes what I can tell you. There are no insulated or neoprene hip waders in it, no pair listed as women's, no weights and no maker-stated waterproof ratings. Those gaps show up as dashes in the table. A dash means we did not find the value, not that the feature is missing, so if one matters to you, open the product page and look for the maker's wording.
When you compare two pairs, I'd go in this order: foot first, because it decides how you will walk in them; material second, because it decides how warm and how clammy you will be; then the warranty, then the size range for your foot or your build. The marks tell you how far to trust each answer.
Fit checks when they arrive
Try them on at home before you take them to the water. Stand, squat and step up onto a chair, with the socks and base layers you will wear. The crotch should not pull or feel low, and the leg should not bind at the knee. If the belt or loops hold the top where you want it and nothing pinches, keep them. If something does, read the return rules on the Amazon page before you wear them outside, because a pair used in water is a different case from a pair tried on in the hall.
Common mistakes
- Going deeper than the top of the leg. Water over the top fills the wader.
- Skipping the belt. The belt that holds them up is not a safety belt. See below.
- Reading "hip" as "all-purpose". Match the height to the water.
- Guessing the boot size. On bootfoot pairs the boot cannot be swapped, so check the chart for the model.
Safety on the water
Hip waders leave more of you exposed and offer less margin than chest waders. If you fall, water can fill the legs. The Orvis wading guide says fast water does not have to be deep to pull your feet out from under you, that you should avoid wading above the knees in fast water, that you should pivot upstream when turning, and that a wading staff goes on your downstream side.
My rules, which are editorial advice and not medical advice: stay well below the top of the wader, carry a wading staff in current, test the bottom as you go, turn back if you feel uncomfortable, and wear a life jacket on a boat. Keep children in shallow, slow water with an adult within reach.
Care in brief
Rinse off mud and sand, dry the inside and outside, and store loosely, out of the sun. Our guides on cleaning waders, storing waders and finding a leak cover the detail, and wader repair and repair kits cover the fix.
Brands in the table
Frogg toggs has three of the nine. The others come from Compass 360, Drake, Kylebooker and Paramount, plus KastKing and Trudave, which do not have pages on this site. See the brand catalog, or go back to the main waders page for every type.

Questions people ask
What are hip waders?
Hip waders, also called thigh waders, are waders that cover the leg up to the upper thigh and attach to a belt or belt loops. Frogg toggs describes them as extending from just below the hips and suiting shallow, low-current water. Some have the boot attached (bootfoot), and some end in a sock for use with a separate wading boot (stockingfoot).
How deep can I wade in hip waders?
Only as deep as the top of the leg, and I'd stay well below it. Frogg toggs says to step up to waist or chest waders for deeper water or stronger current. The Orvis wading guide adds that fast water does not need to be deep to pull your feet out from under you, and that you should avoid wading above the knees in fast water.
Are hip waders good for fly fishing?
For small streams and shallow flats, yes, and some of the hip waders in our data are listed for fly fishing. For wading rivers, most fly anglers choose chest waders, because hip waders give you less margin when the water is higher than expected. A stockingfoot hip wader with a separate boot is the closer match to a fly angler's setup.
Are there hip waders for women?
No pair in our data is listed as women's. One bootfoot pair, the Trudave StreamFlex, lists sizes in both men's and women's numbering, for example 7 men's with 9 women's. Check the chart for the exact model, and see our women's waders page for pairs sold as women's.
What are the best hip waders for men?
I don't rank them, because the right pair depends on the water and how far you walk. In our data, five hip waders are listed as men's and one as unisex, with three not confirmed. Compare the foot, the material and the warranty, then check the size chart for the exact model.
Are PVC hip waders any good?
They can be for short, shallow trips. Frogg toggs calls PVC waterproof, abrasion-resistant and budget-friendly, and notes that PVC and rubber are less breathable than membrane fabrics. In our data, four hip waders are nylon-and-PVC and five are breathable.
Are there insulated or neoprene hip waders?
Not in our data. Two hip waders are listed as not insulated, and none are listed as insulated or neoprene, so the table shows a dash for the rest. If you need warmth, look at insulated bootfoot waders, or add layers under a breathable pair.
Can I get hip waders with a felt sole?
One pair, the Frogg Toggs Rana II, lists a felt or cleated option. Rules on felt differ by state and water body, so check with your state fish and wildlife agency. Most hip waders in our data state cleated rubber or a lug sole, or no sole at all.
